About this ebook

Is there a God?
Is there a purpose to the universe?
Why are we here? Is everything a result of chance?
These questions have haunted all seekers of truth. Today, we are facing a crisis in modern thought due to the challenges posed by science, which has forced us to question the very idea of God. The conclusions of scientific paradigm have led many of us into the grasp of atheism, agnosticism and nihilism. The younger scientific generation in particular, seeks a purpose to existence and a cause behind everything. The current crisis of thought has emerged from the almost impeccable developments in science over the last 300 years. We cannot seem to reconcile the concept of God that we are taught from childhood with our understanding of the universe as given by science, Even those who are established in their faith, are overwhelmed by the sheer logic and reasoning presented by the atheists.
ls there a way out of this crisis? Breaking The God Delusion is a revealing and riveting juxtaposition of faith and science. Written for the modern mind, it shows a way past our existential dilemma. A book that intoxicates the mind, captures the heart and brings solace to the soul.

Breaking The God Delusion from Science to God - One Point Six Technologies Pvt Ltd

Great is the tenacity with which man clings to the senses.Yet, however substantial he may think the external world in which he lives and moves, there comes a time in the lives of individuals and of races when, involuntarily, they ask, ‘Is this real?’

To the person who never finds a moment to question the credentials of his senses, whose every moment is occupied with some sort of sense-enjoyment – even to him death comes, and he also is compelled to ask, ‘Is this real?’

Religion begins with this question and ends with its answer. Even in the remote past, where recorded history cannot help us, in the mysterious light of mythology, back in the dim twilight of civilisation, we find the same question was asked: ‘What becomes of this? What is real?’

    PROLOGUE:

    WHY THIS BOOK?

We live in a world that has changed a great deal in the last 300 years, mainly due to advancements in science. Our altered world view has been driven by a renewed understanding of how the universe works. The revolutionary theories that have led to this paradigm shift in ideas have also challenged our long held views on God.

This tectonic shift in understanding can be said to have begun with Nicolaus Copernicus, who professed the heliocentric theory for our solar system, and with Johannes Kepler and his laws of planetary motion, which proposed that heavenly bodies moved in orbits explainable by such laws. Isaac Newton then generalized the laws of motion which governed all bodies, in his work Principia Mathematica. He formulated the laws of motion and universal gravitation which have ever since dominated our understanding of the mechanics of motion.

One after the other, revolutionary scientific theories gradually transformed our understanding of the universe. Darwin’s theory on the evolution of species ushered in a completely new, and considered by many to be blasphemous, view of how life evolved through natural selection. James Clerk Maxwell introduced to us the laws of electromagnetism. His theory that light is nothing but periodic variations of electric and magnetic fields can be said to be the most significant revelation regarding the nature of light.

Einstein’s theory of relativity established time, not as a static entity whose flow could never be altered, but as flowing at different rates. This theory is still considered pathbreaking and revolutionary in physics. It introduced us to a new reality – that time doesn’t flow at the same rate throughout the universe, that the rate of flow is dependant on factors such as relative speed and gravitational field strength.

During the same era, scientists also uncovered the astonishing fact that all visible matter in the universe is possibly made up of the same set of fundamental particles. The discovery of fundamental units of atoms, like electrons, protons and neutrons, ushered in a new age of quantum physics. Niels Bohr introduced his model of the atom, which defined how electrons are arranged in defined orbits around the nucleus. All the elements of matter are thus the result of a particular arrangement and number of electrons found around the nucleus of an atom.

These developments in quantum physics inevitably led to the search for the Holy Grail of physics – the set of fundamental particles of which everything in the visible universe is composed. All the stars and galaxies, planets and their moons, asteroids and comets are made up of these fundamental atomic and subatomic particles. It is important to note that we are still dealing with the ‘visible’ universe here. Over 90% of matter in the universe is still unaccounted for; termed dark matter and dark energy [we will come to this later]. Everything we see around us, including our own bodies, is made up of fundamental particles of matter. The stars are predominantly made of the simplest form of atom available – the Hydrogen atom. It has one proton and one electron. Hydrogen is the most abundant atomic element in the entire universe. Stars are powered by Hydrogen and through their nuclear fusion reactions they continuously produce tremendous amounts of energy. Planets are created from the raw materials in the same nebulous dust clouds that lead to star formation. As poignantly stated by some scientists, we are nothing but stardust.

How does our understanding of science fit in with the understanding of ourselves as a part of the universe? Here lies the nub. We try to understand ourselves through the knowledge proferred as scientific theory. The origin of life is thus explained through electro-chemical processes that governed early earth. But human evolution through the ages has compelled us to develop an alternative understanding – that there is a Supreme Power or God, who is the creator of the universe.

Here, I request the reader to put aside the word God on a shelf for the time being, since your mind is already conditioned by certain definitions built up over the course of your life. This is thus your first challenge: to face up to and not allow your prejudices to overrule the hope of a better understanding. Prejudice is found in science as well; scientists adamantly defend old theories when new ones are proposed. It is ironic that new theories are generally accepted only when the proponents of older theories die! Let us not follow that pattern. Instead, let us be seekers of truth, open to challenging our own long held views.

The urge to explore is man’s greatest quality, developed through evolution. To know the unknown, the curiosity to seek what lies beyond the horizon, has always inspired man to keep probing deeper and deeper into the mysteries of the universe. Science is thus mankind’s greatest gift, leading to numerous discoveries and the formulation of laws verifiable through direct sensory observation.

The verification of its theories through direct observation using the evolved human mind and senses has been the greatest strength of science. But it has its down side as well. Man’s concept of God has sustained mighty blows due to the discoveries of science, which one by one, have eliminated the role of God with each new theory. Since our (mis)conceptions about God were replaced with well defined scientific laws, scientists went on to claim that everything in life and the universe can be reasoned and explained by formulating theories and testing them by observation. From the cosmic to the quantum level, science has attempted to dissect creation and uncover the laws hidden deep within, claiming there is no place for God in the universe, that God is a delusion invented by man for his selfish and mundane ends.

In this book I have attempted to show how such a ’scientific’ view is both arrogant and insufficient in dismissing the role of God. But I must also point out that religion has often dogmatically challenged credible science to its own detriment. Both views are counterproductive to our search for the Truth, having done more harm than good. If we are truly the seekers of truth, then we must have an open mind, and question both our scientific and religious beliefs. Any true scientist has the admirable quality to question the very foundation of any premise. Without this, no great theories could ever have been conceived. If Einstein had not taken that intuitive leap, there would be no Theory of Relativity; if Newton had not questioned phenomena people saw every day, there would be no laws of motion or gravity.

Religious dogmatism, on the other hand, has done more harm than good to our understanding of God. It has caused many a student and follower of science to turn towards atheism, agnosticism, and more dangerously, nihilism. The need today is for religious dogmatism to be replaced by openness to scientific thought, not to fear it. At the same time, scientific dogmatism has to be replaced by an acceptance of its pitfalls in comprehending
