Introducing The Suspect
The story of the book begins at the Centennial Olympic Park. The park was designed as the town square
of the Olympics and is a 22-acre public park located in downtown Atlanta, Georgia. Thousands of onlookers had assembled for a performance during the 1996 Summer Olympics in the said park. Sometime after the midnight of July 27, 1996, Eric Robert Rudolph, a terrorist placed a green bag holding a fragmentation-laden pipe bomb under a seat. He later bombed a lesbian nightclub and two abortion clinics as well.
Richard Allensworth Jewell was an American security guard and a police officer who was working as a security guard for the event. While doing the rounds, he discovered a backpack containing three pipe bombs on the park grounds. Thinking quickly, Jewell alerted the Georgia Bureau of Investigation officers. Jewell helped vacate the space before the bomb detonated, saving many people from injury or death. Jewell found the bomb exactly nine minutes before the bomber, Rudolph called 911 to warn about his act and the impact it would have.
Jewell and other security guards immediately sprang to action and began clearing the area surrounding the suspicious package. The bomb squad began investigating the backpack. However, the bomb exploded about thirteen minutes into the investigation. A lady named Alice Hawthorne was killed due to the explosion, and many other spectators were injured. Amidst the chaos caused due to the explosion, media ran for covering the breaking news. A cameraman faced death not because of the explosion, but because of the panic in which he ran
