About this ebook

I started this book during the lockdown period of COVID-19 when my mother suggested that I try my hand at translating a Tamil book. When I was a kid, my mother had introduced me to several children’s stories in English and Tamil. The reading habit that was infused into me during my childhood has stayed on with me till this day. So, when an opportunity came for me to translate a children’s book, I had no second thoughts. I believe that stories not only inculcate good morals in the minds of children but also boost up their creative thinking and language skills. The original book being in Tamil, this English version would benefit not only the children of our country, but across the world.

While school books help build knowledge in children, it is the story books that help enrich their moral behaviour and expand their horizons. In this book, you will come across many interesting characters in the form of sixteen short stories that will make you admire and learn from them. I hope you travel and live with these characters, and enjoy your time reading this book.

    PREFACE

Ilove writing stories for children. Though I have worked on numerous short stories and articles for adults, I feel an overwhelming joy in narrating stories for children, which just cannot be described in words. The reason being, children who read these stories will try to take in the good morals, or spread their creative wings and start flying to great heights!

Many children’s story writers like Azha Valliappa, Doctor Poovannan, Chella Ganapathy, Revathi and Kirungai Sethupathi have used new techniques and new plots, and have produced plenty of quality stories over the years. All these writers’ motives would definitely be the same.

We would have read about ghosts, fairies, flying carpets, talking animals and so many more unreal characters, written by talented writers. We can never forget the excitement and the inspiration that these stories would have impacted us with. Today, more than the fairy tales, the current scenario demands stories which stress the importance of planting trees, stories about environmental awareness, good moral stories and stories about the effects of latest technology. This is the need of the hour. My intention is to plant socially responsible morals in the minds of children by providing quality stories, where story-telling grandmothers and storytellers have reduced.

Most of the stories in this book have been inspired by true incidents. Some of the characters in this book are living amongst us, in some part of this world. Only the story plot and the techniques that I used to improve the story are imaginary. I have penned the stories in such a way that each story conveys a good moral. Story reading should not only be a time pass but also a medium to cultivate general knowledge.

I have strived to instil greenery through my stories; I have set out to create a green nation; I have taken efforts to preserve the environment. My desire is to help develop patriotism, social thinking, and the thought of helping poor people and caring for fellow human beings, in the minds of the children reading this book. I hope these stories bring good awareness among children.

I wrote these stories originally in my beloved Tamil language. Mr. Vignesh has done a wonderful job of translating them in simple English to benefit many children who
