About this ebook

This book is a true story based on my memories of living in a nursing home for ten years. All names have been changed to protect the innocent and guilty people from harassment. I also want to avoid any lawsuits over revealing the truth about the abuse and neglect that I suffered through while a resident of the nursing home.

I have amnesia and forgot quite a bit of information. However, I kept a private blog and private Facebook posts that bring the memories back to me.

The story that you're about to read is the truth of my experience at this nursing home. All nursing homes aren't bad and most are helpful and understanding of what the residents need. But if you're considering putting a relative or a friend in a nursing home, then this book will help you decide if the nursing home is right for the person you care about. Outer appearances of the building can sway you in the wrong manner. The staff is the most important part of this journey.

My story is very sad and very shocking. The truth is not pretty yet needs to be told.

I hope you're helped by my story.

    Prologue

This book is a true story about the ten years that I lived in a nursing home. Lived is a stretch as I resided there but there was no living. From abusive CNAs to married but cheating nurses, from ignorant staff leadership to uncaring physical therapists,  the story isn’t pretty.

I awoke from a coma to find out that my life had drastically changed forever.

I have amnesia and forgot a lot about my experience. However, the bad things are always on my mind and recalling them brings me to tears.

After I was conscious and had a good concept of my situation , I wanted to be in touch with the world and people that I could remember.  Mom brought me my laptop to be connected with the outside world.

I’m hopeful that this book will help you if you have to place a friend or relative in a nursing home. My warnings and advice might seem a little bit strange but I’m writing from the heart. I don’t want anyone else to go through the hell that I did.

All the names have been changed. Descriptions are general and not exact. The names of the nursing home has been changed to avoid litigation. The new administrator would sue me in a heartbeat and she knows of my unhappiness.

Everything I write about is true to my memory. I had a blog where I privately wrote about my life and I reference it often.

You’ll laugh, cry and get angry at the experience I had with my life in hell at a nursing home.

    Cajunboi

    ––––––––

I can’t write this book without talking about my best friend in the world, Cajunboi.  Cajunboi and I met through an internet chat room. The theme of this chat room was Hairy Men. I’m obsessed with hairy men!  I think hairy men are extremely sexy and they can’t never have too much hair. Yes, hairy backs are sexy to me!  I know that I’m a rarity in this world but hair is so sexy to me. I joined the chat room as a man liking hairy men. The gay chat room didn’t want women in there and I relate to gay men better than straight men. After all, we both love the same thing!

The chat room was guys chatting in public and going private. Some people would give out the URL of their MySpace profile with pictures of their hairy parts. Others would give you the URL to their website.  I’d get a lot of photos of hairy men and then I would have material to, uhm, take care of myself.

Cajunboi and I began chatting about our love of hairy men. He is gay and has a hairy man. We  were chatting about a lot of things besides hairy men. We got really close and eventually I told him that I was female. It didn’t bother him and our friendship grew stronger. We talked on the phone and I loved his southern accent!  He is soft-spoken and polite and utterly charming.

I wanted to meet him and offered to fly him out here and to put him in a motel for the week. His lover was a little suspicious as he didn’t know that Cajunboi was online in chat rooms. I don’t remember what Cajunboi told him about meeting me online but his lover agreed to let him visit me. I had a room for Cajunboi but he needs his privacy and so do I.

We both love Chinese food and ate at Chinese restaurants every day. I drove him to Onset, a small town at the beginning of the cape. We walked along the beach in May and it was deserted. However, seagulls were flying close to us in case we had food. Seagulls will fly to you and with their talons will grab the food from your hands!  Cajunboi wasn’t used to birds flying close by and panicked!  I laughed at him and we ran into the car. I doubt that he ever forgot about that!

One of my favorite places to go to is Fort Phoenix in Fairhaven. Cajunboi and I sat on a bench by the ocean and watched the tide go out and the boats going in and out. He reminded me of the day that we sat down and he laughed at me.  My legs don’t touch the ground because I have 23" (twenty-three inch) legs!  He couldn’t believe that they were dangling in the air!

We drove through influential areas with mansions and beach houses. I showed him the best areas and he loved it. We had great food, great attractions and great fun just being with each other. He came to this area three times if I remember right.

I could and would share everything with Cajunboi. The fear of my secrets being shared was very strong yet with Cajunboi those fears disappeared. He shared his private life with me and some of the information brings me to tears. To this day I can tell him anything and I believe that he feels the same way.

He visited me twice while I was in the Home. Correction:  Cajunboi provided me with the details of his visits. I actually visited you 6 times in the home, I think.  The first time was 2011.  I think your Dad died the following year So I almost didn’t come, but did.  So I came 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015 and I want to say 2016.   I know that he wanted to visit me in the hospital when he found out how ill I was but mom discouraged him. She had enough to deal with because of my illness and dad sick at home. Having company would have been a big strain on her and she didn’t feel very hospitable at that time. He understood the situation and he didn’t push the visit. Being in a coma would have made the visit a bore anyway. With me dying, I think he wanted to say goodbye to me.

He paid for his flights and car rental and he stayed with mom. She has three bedrooms and only uses one for sleeping. She cooked for him and he ordered our food as well. He didn’t want to have her cook for him and do extra work. We would go out for lunch and then do some shopping. He was working and only had a week off so stayed here for four days and then had a few days left for vacation at home.

He hasn’t been here in six years because he moved further west for a few years and he had to deal with the hurricane and the aftermath of it. I hoped that he would visit me in the medical group home that I’m in now. But his mother died, he moved back Louisiana and the pandemic had prevented him from traveling.

I can’t say enough about Cajunboi  He calls mom every Saturday to check on her and me. He bought me the iPhone and pays the monthly forty dollar bill ($40) because he is the best friend in the world. He offered to pay for lunch for me and mom for my birthday. He called the restaurant, gave them his credit card number, and said to eat whatever we wanted. The CNAs came along and one stayed in the van while the other one joined us, uninvited. Mom and I split a pizza and had a coupon for the food. The cost is our lunch was $8 with the coupon. The CNA ordered the fish and chips and two sodas. Her lunch was $19 and she didn’t offer to pay for her lunch or to leave the tip. She never said thank you either.

We email each other though he is slow to respond!  He’s busy with work and his husband. Yes, gay marriage is legal in Louisiana and they got married about two years ago. It isn’t known to everyone at his job but after nearly twenty-three years together, they were married and they are very happy.

This year he can’t visit because of COVID-19 and the airlines aren’t operational yet. His husband is out-of-work due to the pandemic and collects unemployment checks. Cajunboi  was out of work for a while and now is back to work. The pandemic affected everyone who was out of work and he can’t afford to visit me this year. Hopefully next year I’ll have moved to another nursing home from this horrible medical group home. Then he can visit provided mom is doing well. If she can’t handle the company and visit, then he would probably stay at a motel nearby.
