Louie Giglio, the director of the Passion Movement that has reached more than a million young people, shares Goliath Must Fall for Young Readers, a children’s book about facing fears and overcoming adversity by relying on God.

Our kids face more pressure and stress than ever before. Issues such as fear, jealousy, loneliness, and anxiety seem like giants standing in the way of the joy-filled childhood and adolescence we want them to have. In Goliath Must Fall for Young Readers, pastor Louie Giglio shows kids that only God can help them defeat those giants—and He will.

This book:

  • Is adapted for middle grade readers, ages 8 to 12, from the national bestseller Goliath Must Fall, which has sold over 200,000 copies
  • Has practical tools and thought-provoking activities to help kids learn strategies to surrender their fears, overcome bad habits, and let go of the comforts this world tells them they have to have
  • Is a great purchase for kids who are struggling with stress, anxiety, technology addiction, or other troubles and for fans of Louie’s other children’s books, Indescribable and How Great Is Our God

While addressing the struggles kids face today with temptation, social media comparisons, and anxiety, Louie Giglio reveals a surprising twist in the David and Goliath story that might just change everything about the way we see Jesus and how to conquer the giants in our lives.

This is a children’s book about facing fears and overcoming adversity by relying on God and it is very relevant during this time of a worldwide pandemic. Young people fear this virus and they miss going to school and being with their friends so any anxiety, loneliness, and uncertainty they already feel has certainly increased! To help them, Pastor Louie Giglio has written a book to assure them that the same God who helped David defeat a giant named Goliath is still here to help them defeat the giants they are facing. There are quotes to highlight and and thoughts to ponder but Giglio doesn't talk over the heads of kids reading this book. Goliath Must Fall is easy to understand but it still accomplishes what Giglio intended: young people will be encouraged and motivated to stand up to the problems they are facing, to put on the Armor of God, and to "use the sword by reading God's Word and memorizing verses that focus on God's power and peace." I especially like that there are personal experiences and Bible references to increase their understanding and specified blank pages for them to jot down their own thoughts. This book targets readers 8-12 but it is a valuable resource for all of us who want to grow in our Christian faith! I recommend Goliath Must Fall for Young Readers to all who have young people in their lives and I believe that it would be a wonderful addition to your church library.I accepted a copy of this book from the publisher. There was absolutely no obligation for a positive review. These are my own thoughts.

Goliath Must Fall for Young Readers - Louie Giglio

CHAPTER 1

Bigger Than Your Giant

Not long ago a woman was killed by her pet tiger. I’m not going to go into details, but it was bad. Very bad.

This whole event made me sad. But I also wondered, Why would anyone have a pet tiger? (No offense if you have a Bengal tiger in your backyard.)

Tigers are meat eaters! They survive in the wild by hunting and killing their prey. And a tiger will always be a tiger. Why would anyone try to make a pet out of one of these natural-born killers?

Here’s what I think happened. When the woman first met the tiger, it was small and playful and cuddly. I bet she held that cub and it looked up at her in delight. A bond was formed. She gave her pet tiger cub a name. Maybe Mooshie or BooBoo or Stripey or Elwood. She took it home and gave it a warm space to sleep and a safe place to play. All was well, day after day after day after day.

Until.

Elwood.

Grew.

Then that playful pet grew into what it truly was: a savage killer.

That’s pretty much what happens with our giants—the bad habits we form, the wrong choices we make, the lies we believe, the same old broken ways of thinking that we don’t let go of.

They didn’t start out as giants. If they had, we’d have never taken them home. No, these pets started out as cute and cuddly babies. They didn’t look like they’d do us any harm. They were fun. They made us feel good. We formed bonds with these pets and gave them a warm place to stay in our minds and hearts and lives.

OUR GIANTS ARE SHOWING THEIR TRUE COLORS—AND THEY AREN’T PETS ANYMORE. THEY’RE SAVAGE KILLERS.

But these pets have grown. They’re showing their true colors—and they aren’t pets anymore. They’re savage killers. Nine-foot-tall giants. They’re ripping into us and tearing our lives apart.

We really want to get rid of these giants.

But how?

MY OWN PET GIANT

Goliath wasn’t born nine feet tall. And whatever you’re wrestling with wasn’t born a giant either. I’m guessing it was actually fun or comforting in the beginning. Your killer was disguised as a friend you couldn’t live without. Then one day—a day you didn’t choose—the mask came off and the giant punched you in the throat.

I know what I’m talking about because I’ve been attacked by my own giant. It beat me up and pushed me into a deep, dark hole of depression and anxiety. Since then, I’ve figured out that anxiety is not my giant. It’s just a symptom of my giant’s attack on me.

So what was my giant? Looking back, I see the footprints of not one but two of my own Goliaths: control and rejection.

You see, wherever I am, I want to make things better. I see what is, but I dream of what can be. Whether I’m driving through a city, eating in a restaurant, or walking through a slum in Haiti, I’m constantly thinking of things I want to change for the better and how I can get people to help me change them. But that’s a good thing, right?

The problem is that my dreaming talent can also invite the baby cub of control into the mix. Here’s the deal: I want to change things for the better, which is great, but I also want to be in control of how it’s done. Trying to control the world is a disaster waiting to happen. Why? Because we’re never really in control.

ANXIETY: a feeling of doubt, dread, fear, nervousness, or worry that just won’t seem to go away

Then there’s the giant of rejection. If you add my need to be in control to my need to be liked by everyone, you have a perfect storm. I’ve been a pastor and speaker for many years now, and when I first started out, I spoke here, there, and everywhere. I was always on the move. So if people didn’t like me in one place, it didn’t matter. I’d soon be off to another group of people.

Then we started Passion City Church and planted ourselves in one place. I thought I could make everyone happy (control is talking now). And I really felt like I needed to make them happy. But I couldn’t make everyone happy (no one can, by the way). When my giant need for control met and married my giant fear of rejection, they tag-teamed me like two pro wrestlers. They slammed me onto the mat and hurled me out of the ring. My pets of being in control and being liked had grown into full-fledged giants. They were taunting me and defying my God.

They were (and honestly, they still are sometimes) a couple of my giants.

What about you? What are your giants?

MEET THE GIANTS

Some of you know exactly what your giant is. You don’t even need to think about it, because you battle it every day.

Others of you aren’t exactly sure what to call your giant. It’s not as easy to see. All you know is that something isn’t right and you want to fix
