y parents weren’t Christians precisely, but they had Christian values. My father was a Rastafarian who believed that Haile Selassie was God, but he later cut his dreadlocks and stopped following the religion, but that was before I was born.
While growing up in Jamaica, three of my five siblings and me had to go to Sunday School Church Service every Sunday, unless we were very ill and unable to walk to church.
Church has always been fun; we would look forward to it and actively participate in church.
As a child, I would always pray in my mind to get or achieve something, and used to realize that it always or often come to pass. Still, I never said anything to anyone because I was unsure and didn’t understand what was happening until I later reflected on it.
I have always fancied music and partying, and this started in my early teenage years as others would say, teenagers start to explore and think they are adults.
Several times, we go to parties without our parents' approval, and when we got back home, my mother would lock the door, so I had to spend the rest of the morning lying under a thick tarpaulin that was used to block out the chicken coop. Worse still, the dogs would lie on it to keep warm and relax, so I had to get them to move from the area to shelter me from the morning dew so that I can get some rest before daybreak when my mother opens the front door. I had to contend with mosquito bites and hums in my ears when I try to sleep because they were looking for prey to feed off.
It always takes forever for the day to break for me to get into the house and get a few hours of comfortable sleep and ready myself for the daily activities.
When we were not partying, we would sit at the edge of the lane across the street that my friends live, bunched in groups of twos and threes, discussing what teenagers would find amusing such as what happened at the last party or some history that was epic that would make us reminisce and laugh every time we repeat it.
I started to feel worried that something could go wrong; we should head to our various homes and not stay out.
What I would realize is that when this intuition is stimulated, something usually goes wrong, but we would be lucky enough to escape, tell the tale and mock ourselves about what we did or took place.
I can vividly remember one instance, a friend of ours was booked to DJ at a party we’ve been anticipating, so we thought we need to go to support him, but for some reason, I didn’t feel good about attending and was worried for no specific reason.
I also suggested to the others that the area is known for crime and unlawfulness, but we convinced ourselves to go. We sorted our outfit and time to leave for the party planned.
We got to the party, it was going great, and everyone was dancing, drinking and enjoying themselves without a clue that rival gang/men who had their disagreement met at the party which ended up in a shoot-out.
All I can remember is hearing shots loud as ever in our vicinity, and all we could do was to run for cover and make our way out of the community that was about fifteen to twenty minutes’ drive.
You would have to see it to believe it, but I ran from the party straight to my friend’s house with little or no walking involved out of fright then waited for a few minutes to see everyone rolling in, talking about what happened and which direction we took to get out of the area to get home.
We were laughing
