About this ebook

He longs for his wolf pack but murder, romance and science is keeping him confined.

It seems to wildlife biologist, Peter Kane that he’s entrenched in danger and embroiled in betrayal. His wolfen olfactory implant has unsettled him, changed him. He’s been away from his wolf research for far too long and his romance with Marie is much too elusive.

To Marie, her quest to unravel her past is leading to heartache and fear. She can trust nobody, including herself. When the investigation into the illicit lab that stole her memory wraps up, an unsettling truth emerges. In its wake, Peter wallows in anguish until a virtual guide gifts him a message and sets him free.

Chapter 1

He’s there before me at the door. Are you okay? he asks, his face pale and his golden eyes wide. Peter, my Wolf.

His emotional display of concern surprises me. I shrug. I am indeed not at all okay. But on the other hand it matters not and therein lies my anguish. Why are you here? I ask, motioning him in.

My Wolf, enters without hesitation, his focus entirely on me. I was told things aren’t as they seem, he says.

That, they aren’t. He follows me through to the living room and sinks into my upholstered side chair as I plop onto the sofa. At one time it had been my goal to get him to snuggle beside me. It seems a rather useless pursuit, now. How much have you been told? I ask. I don’t want to lie to him, but I don’t want to reveal all, yet…in the hopes that despite the truth, perhaps there’s still a chance that he and I can…will…

Not much, he says. Only that your age I was given was inaccurate and… He pauses. Is that a slight blush warming his cheeks?

We were both told that I’m twenty-five when I’m really thirty-one. Parts of me are, anyways, according to all that’s been recently revealed to me. Illicit genetic manipulations make me appear fifteen, or so my Wolf complains. My nubile appearance always comes between us. If the age revelation had added more wrinkles to my face and less firmness to my breasts, it would have impressed him more than the six useless calendar years.

He covers his mouth and coughs. And I was told that you’re worth it, he adds.

You were told I’m worth it? Worth what?

Worth… He drops his eyes and blushes. Worth…caring about, I guess. Worth delaying my research trip. Worth the time I have spent helping track down those responsible for your condition.

My heart warms. He has done so much for me, rescued me so often, given up so many months of his life to hunt down those behind the illegal research laboratory that stole my memory…and my age. All that he’s done and yet romance-wise, I’ve never been able get more than one quick stolen kiss from him. Who told you I’m worth it? I ask. I know who. Constable Renita.

However, she sits like a cold boulder between the wolf and I even though it is not my fault that she, too, loves me. So sad for her that my heart has always belonged to Peter and too bad for him that he won’t accept it. All this love floating around out there and no one willing to receive it.

Constable Renita dropped by, Peter admits.

Renita. He’d have her between his silk linens in a minute if only she were so inclined. I’ve seen the admiration in his eyes.

Ah ha, I say, just to be antagonistic. And she would know what I’m worth. He feels jealous of the Constable but doesn’t know why. However, he has the wolfen sense of smell, thanks to an imbedded gene, and will someday be able to put a name to the lesbian odors that incite his discomfort. For now, though, I am free to tease him.

I suppose she would, he reluctantly admits.

I don’t tell him that, truth be told, as of today the Constable feels I’m worthless, a nonentity, without a soul. Devoid of human rights and emotions. She’s probably told him otherwise to pave the way to painlessly extricate her own heart from the robotic being she believes I am. She says there’s much more to know but she promised she wouldn’t tell me. She suggested you might, though.

She did, did she? How kind of her to leave it up to me to stab the man of my dreams in
