      Introduction

      WICCA IS A WONDERFUL, personal religion based on the philosophy of oneness with nature. Wiccans respect Mother Nature and all she provides as the divine from the air we breathe, to the food we eat and the earth we live on. It’s also a personal practice, and as such there is no central body or church to refer to nor are there rituals to become a Wiccan. Each practicing Wiccan has his or her understanding of their connection with the universe and becoming one is as easy as deciding to be one.

      By understanding oneness with nature, the Wiccan believes in the influence that minds, energies and physical actions can take on the universe. These actions can have spiritual, emotional and even physical effects. We call the way we influence nature, spells. And spells are cast with intention that you, the spellcaster sends out into the world.

      A Rune set is a fantastic magickal tool to help cast spells and perform divination. Each of the mystical symbols carved on a rune stone represents different aspects of the universe and being. By choosing the right runes or indeed even performing a rune reading, the universe can provide clarity and answers to your situations.

      When you use your spellcasting intention to read the Runes, you are able to understand situations that you did not understand before. You can find resolve in present moments and even see the path you need to take into the future. All these insights can provide you with the motivation, energy and confidence to take action toward achieving goals.

      In this book you will learn the meaning of the Runes or the Elder Futhark. I will teach you some tips to buying or crafting your own rune set as well as different ways to read the runes. You will also learn some simple spells that you can cast with your Rune set to strengthen your friendships, romantic relationships and find prosperity.

      You do not need to be a Wiccan to enjoy this book and cast the spells within. However, having a belief in what the universe can reveal to you with runes is essential.

      I hope by reading this book you will have all the knowledge and confidence to understand your rune set and cast your own spells. Be patient with yourself and your practice as we begin.

      Chapter 1

      Introduction to Runes

      RUNES ARE POPULAR AMONG spellcasting Wiccans. The distinctive stave-like shapes are used in divination stones, in spells, on protective talismans, and much more. Although they are most often associated with divination, it may surprise you to discover that the origin of rune stones lies deep in history - not as a divination system, but as a functioning alphabet.

      What most Wiccans refer to as runes are in fact the 24 letters of the Elder Futhark. The Elder Futhark is a writing alphabet that was used until about 8,000 years ago in Norse cultures in Europe, before being replaced by the Younger Futhark. Some scholars and occultists read the Younger Futhark or other groups of runes as part of their practice, but the Elder Futhark are by far the most common.

      It is not known whether ancient Norse people used the runes for divination, which is how they are most commonly used today. The evidence is scant and seems to suggest that runic alphabets were used predominantly as any other alphabet might be used, and that the rune stones scattered around Europe were not necessarily sites of ritual or religious activity. Scholars of the runes debate their historical magickal use.
