Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, in 1859. Before starting his writing career, Doyle attended medical school, where he met the professor who would later inspire his most famous creation, Sherlock Holmes. A Study in Scarlet was Doyle's first novel; he would go on to write more than sixty stories featuring Sherlock Holmes. He died in England in 1930.

Ueberblicke ich meine Berichte und Notizen über die von Sherlock Holmes behandelten Fälle aus den Jahren 1882—90, so treten mir so viele absonderliche, interessante Züge entgegen, dass es mir schwer wird, die besten auszusuchen. Indessen sind einige bereits durch die Zeitungen bekannt geworden, während andere zur Entfaltung gerade derjenigen Eigenschaften, welche meinen Freund in so hohem Grade auszeichneten, keine rechte Gelegenheit darboten. In einigen Fällen scheiterte sogar seine Kunst, und die Erzählung derselben würde sich nicht lohnen, während andere nur teilweise aufgeklärt worden sind, so dass ihre Lösung mehr auf Vermutung und Wahrscheinlichkeit beruht als auf jenem absolut logischen Beweis, an dem Sherlock Holmes seine ganz besondere Freude hatte. Einer dieser letzteren Kriminalfälle war jedoch in seinen Einzelheiten so merkwürdig, so schrecklich in seinen Folgen, dass ich davon berichten möchte, obwohl mancher Punkt darin nicht aufgeklärt wurde und sich wohl nie völlig anfklären wird.
Das Jahr 1887 war besonders reich an interessanten Fällen, über welche ich mir Aufzeichnungen gemacht habe. Ich finde darunter Berichte über die schwindelhafte Bettler-Gesellschaft, die einen luxuriösen Klub in den Kellerräumen eines Lagerhauses hatte, über die Thatsachen, die sich auf den Untergang des britischen Seglers ,Sophie Anderson‘ beziehen, über die merkwürdigen Erlebnisse der Patersons auf der Insel Uffa und schliesslich über den Camberwellschen Giftmord. Bekanntlich hat Sherlock Holmes in dem letztgenannten Falle durch das Aufziehen der Uhr des Verstorbenen festzustellen vermocht, dass diese zwei Stunden vorher aufgezogen, und jener demnach um diese Zeit zu Bett gegangen war — ein Beweismittel, das sich zur Aufklärung des Thatbestandes von grosser Wichtigkeit erwies. Auf alle diese Fälle komme ich vielleicht ein andermal ausführlicher zurück, aber kein einziger ist in seinem Verlauf so eigentümlich wie der, den ich mir für diesmal zur Wiedergabe ausgewählt habe.
