Von all den schwierigen Kriminalfällen, die meinem Freunde Sherlock Holmes zur Lösung übertragen wurden, erhielt er nur zwei durch meine Vermittlung. Einer davon betraf Hatherleys Daumen. Wenn sich auch das grossartige Kombinationstalent meines Freundes, dem er so wunderbare Erfolge zu verdanken hatte, hier weniger dabei entfalten konnte, so fing diese Aufgabe doch so toll an und verlief so dramatisch, dass sie mir wohl der Aufzeichnung wert erscheint. Jedenfalls hat sich der tiefe Eindruck, den ich damals erhielt, noch heute, nach zwei Jahren, kaum abgeschwächt.

Es war an einem Sommertag. Ein Bahnbeamter, den ich bei einem Unfall behandelt hatte, verkündete mein Lob in allen Tonarten und hätte mir am liebsten jeden Patienten geschickt, dessen er nur habhaft werden konnte.
Eines Morgens, kurz vor sieben, wurde mir gemeldet, dass eben jener Bahnbeamte mit einem andern, offenbar verletzten Herrn gekommen wäre, um mich zu sprechen. Ich eilte die Treppe hinunter, da ich vermutete, es könne sich wieder um einen Eisenbahnunfall handeln, bei dem rasche Hilfe notwendig sei. Mein alter Freund kam mir vor dem Zimmer schon entgegen.
„Ich hab’ ihn hergebracht, flüsterte er, mit dem Daumen über die Schulter deutend, „den hätten wir sicher.
„Was fehlt ihm denn?" fragte ich, denn das sonderbare Benehmen des Bahnbeamten verriet mir, dass es eine ganz besondere Bewandtnis mit dem Verletzten haben musste, den er so sorglich in mein Zimmer gesperrt hatte.
„Es ist ’n neuer Patient, raunte er mir in seiner treuherzigen Art leise zu. „Ich hielt es für schlauer, ihn gleich selbst herzubringen, so konnte er mir nicht mehr entwischen. Nun kann er nicht mehr weg. Aber jetzt muss ich gehen, Doktor, die Pflicht ruft.
Und fort war er, ehe ich noch Zeit gefunden hatte, ihm für diese gutgemeinte Belebung meiner garnicht beabsichtigten Praxis zu danken.
Im Empfangszimmer fand ich einen Herrn am Tische sitzen, der einen schlichten, bräunlichen Anzug trug, seine einfache Tuchmütze hatte er auf die dort aufgelegten Bücher gelegt. Eine seiner Hände war in ein völlig mit Blut durchtränktes Taschentuch gewickelt. Er war vielleicht 25 Jahre alt; sein Gesicht war ernst und männlich, aber so bleich, dass es mir den Eindruck machte, als wenn er eben eine schwere Nervenerschütterung durchgemacht hätte, die
