Arthur Conan Doyle
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, in 1859. Before starting his writing career, Doyle attended medical school, where he met the professor who would later inspire his most famous creation, Sherlock Holmes. A Study in Scarlet was Doyle's first novel; he would go on to write more than sixty stories featuring Sherlock Holmes. He died in England in 1930.

Zu meinen besten Kameraden während der Schulzeit gehörte ein Knabe Namens Percy Phelps; wir standen im gleichen Alter, doch war er mir um zwei Klassen voraus. Wegen seiner grossen Begabung fielen ihm alljährlich die Preise zu, welche die Schule zu vergeben hatte, und noch beim Abgang verschaffte ihm sein vorzügliches Examen ein Stipendium, in dessen Besitz er seine Studien auf der Universität Cambridge, mit Glanz fortsetzen konnte.
Ich erinnere mich, dass er vornehme Verwandte hatte; sein Oheim mütterlicherseits war Lord Holdhurst, der berühmte Abgeordnete der konservativen Partei. Das wussten wir schon als ganz kleine Knaben, doch brachte es Phelps in der Schule keinerlei Vorteil; es war für uns nur ein Grund mehr, ihn tüchtig auf dem Spielplatz herumzuhetzen oder ihm, wenn sich die Gelegenheit bot, den grossen Ball ans Schienbein zu werfen.
Bei seinem Eintritt in die Welt wurde das natürlich anders. Ich hörte noch gerüchtweise, er habe auf Verwendung einflussreicher Personen eine gute Anstellung im Auswärtigen Amt erhalten, für die ihn seine Begabung befähigte; dann verlor ich ihn jahrelang ganz aus dem Gesicht, bis er sich mir eines Morgens durch den folgenden Brief wieder ins Gedächtnis zurückrief:

Ohne Zweifel erinnerst Du Dich noch von der Schulzeit her an Phelps, genannt ,Kaulquappe‘, der in der fünften Klasse war, als Du die dritte besuchtest. Möglicherweise hast Du auch erfahren, dass mir mein Onkel eine Stelle im Auswärtigen Amte verschafft hat. Diesen ehrenvollen Vertrauensposten habe ich seither bekleidet, aber ein entsetzliches Missgeschick hat mit einem Schlage meine ganze Zukunft vernichtet.
Es würde zu weit führen, wollte ich Dir mein Unglück schriftlich auseinandersetzen; falls Du auf meine Bitte eingehst, wirst Du ohnehin alle Einzelheiten aus meinem Munde hören müssen. Ich bin eben erst von einem Nervenfieber genesen, das mich neun Wochen lang ans Bett gefesselt hat, und ich fühle mich noch recht schwach. Könntest Du mich wohl besuchen und Deinen Freund Holmes veranlassen Dich zu begleiten? Ich möchte gerne seine Ansicht über den Fall hören, trotz der Versicherung der Polizei, dass sich nichts mehr thun lässt. Bitte, bringe ihn so bald wie möglich hierher; jede Minute wird mir zur Ewigkeit, solange ich noch in dieser entsetzlichen Spannung lebe. Sage ihm, dass es nicht ein Beweis von mangelndem Vertrauen ist, wenn ich ihn erst jetzt um Rat frage; ich war seit jenem Schicksalsschlag wie von Sinnen. Jetzt bin ich zwar wieder zu mir selbst gekommen, doch wage ich kaum an die Geschichte zu denken, weil ich einen Rückfall fürchte. Noch fühle ich mich nicht einmal stark genug, um selber zu schreiben, und muss diese Zeilen diktieren.
