Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, in 1859. Before starting his writing career, Doyle attended medical school, where he met the professor who would later inspire his most famous creation, Sherlock Holmes. A Study in Scarlet was Doyle's first novel; he would go on to write more than sixty stories featuring Sherlock Holmes. He died in England in 1930.

Obwohl wir in unserem bescheidenen Heim in der Bakerstrasse schon manchen Besucher in recht dramatischer Weise hatte kommen und gehen sehen, kann ich mich an kein plötzlicheres, und merkwürdigeres Auftreten erinnern als es das des Herrn Dr. Thorneycroft Huxtable war, da er zum ersten Male bei uns erschien. Zuerst kam seine Visitenkarte, die zu klein erschien, um alle seine akademischen Grade und Würden fassen zu können, nach wenigen Sekunden trat er selbst ein — so fest, pomphaft und würdevoll, als ob er die verkörperte Kraft und Selbstzucht wäre. Und doch war, als er kaum die Türe hinter sich geschlossen hatte, seine erste Tat die, dass er gegen den Tisch taumelte und umfiel. So lag denn seine majestätische Gestalt regungslos der Länge nach auf unserem Zimmerteppich.
Wir sprangen auf und starrten einen Moment, sprachlos vor Ueberraschung, auf dieses gewaltige Wrack, das einem unvorhergesehenen, plötzlichen Sturm weit draussen auf dem Ozean des Lebens zum Opfer gefallen zu sein schien. Dann holte Holmes rasch ein Kissen, um es ihm unter den Kopf zu legen, und ich brachte. Branntwein, womit ich seine Lippen benetzte. Das totenblasse. Gesicht zeigte die Spuren schwerer Sorge, die dicken Wassersäcke unter den geschlossenen Augen waren schwarzblau wie Blei, um den offenen Mund spielten schmerzliche Züge. Er war nicht rasiert und nicht gekämmt. Kragen und Hemd deuteten darauf hin, dass der arme Mann, der vor uns gebrochen am Boden lag, eine lange Reise hinter sich hatte.
„Was ist’s, Watson?" fragte mich Holmes.
,,Vollkommene Erschöpfung — möglicherweise bloss Hunger und Müdigkeit," antwortete ich, während ich den schwachen Puls fühlte.
„Er hat eine Rückfahrkarte von Mackleton in Nord-England, sagte Holmes, indem er sie aus der Westentasche herauszog. „Es ist jetzt noch nicht ganz zwölf Uhr. Er muss sehr früh aufgebrochen sein.
Die faltigen Augenlider fingen zu zucken an, und bald blickte ein Paar offener, grauer Augen zu uns empor. Im nächsten Augenblick war der Mann wieder auf den Beinen, und die starke Röte in seinem Gesicht verriet seine Scham.
„Verzeihen Sie diese Schwäche, Herr Holmes, ich bin etwas übermüdet. — Danke Ihnen. Wenn ich ein Glas Milch und ein Stückchen Zwieback bekommen könnte, würde ich rasch wieder wohl sein. Ich bin persönlich gekommen, um Sie dazu zu bewegen, mit mir zurückzufahren. Ich befürchtete, dass Sie ein Telegramm von der Dringlichkeit meines Falles nicht hinreichend überzeugen würde."
„Wenn Sie sich ganz erholt haben —"
„Ich fühle mich wieder vollkommen wohl. Ich begreife gar nicht, wie ich so schwach sein konnte. Ich bitte Sie, Herr Holmes, mit dem nächsten Zug mit mir nach Mackleton zu kommen."
Mein Freund schüttelte den Kopf.
„Mein Kollege Dr. Watson wird mir bestätigen, dass wir gegenwärtig sehr stark beschäftigt sind. Ich habe noch mit den Ferrersschen Dokumenten zu tun, ausserdem steht in Kürze die Abergavennyer Mordaffäre zur Verhandlung; es könnte mich also nur eine aussergewöhnlich wichtige Angelegenheit zu einer Reise veranlassen."
„Wichtig! rief unser Besucher und schlug die Hände überm Kopf zusammen. „Haben Sie denn noch nichts von der Entführung des einzigen Sohnes des Herzogs von Holdernesse gehört?
,,Was! des ehemaligen Ministerpräsidenten?"
„Gewiss. Wir hatten versucht, es tot zu schweigen, aber der »Globe« hat in der gestrigen Abendnummer Andeutungen gebracht. Ich glaubte, es wäre Ihnen schon zu Ohren gekommen."
Holmes streckte seinen langen dünnen Arm aus und nahm den Band mit ,Hʻ aus seiner
