Im Frühling 1887 hatte mein Freund Sherlock Holmes derartige Anstrengungen durchgemacht, dass es geraumer Zeit bedurfte, ehe er wieder zu Kräften kommen konnte. Es handelte sich damals um die Riesenpläne des Barons Maupertuis und die verwickelte Angelegenheit der Holland-Sumatra-Gesellschaft, bei der jedoch politische und finanzielle Rücksichten eine zu bedeutende Rolle spielten, als dass sie sich zur Aufnahme in diese Sammlung eignete.
Die Umstände brachten es aber mit sich, dass Holmes infolgedessen mit einem eigentümlichen Problem in Berührung kam, das ihm Gelegenheit gab, im Kampf gegen das Verbrechen, den er sich zur Lebensaufgabe gemacht hatte, eine ganz neue Waffe in Anwendung zu bringen.
Es war, wie ich aus meinem Notizbuch weiss, am 14. April, als ich durch eine Depesche aus Lyon die Nachricht erhielt, Holmes liege im Hotel Dulong krank darnieder. Ich reiste sofort ab und stand schon vierundzwanzig Stunden später an seinem Lager, wo ich mich glücklicherweise sogleich überzeugen konnte, dass die Symptome der Krankheit nicht allzu gefährlich waren. Selbst seine eiserne Konstitution vermochte die Last nicht auszuhalten, die er sich seit Monaten aufbürdete. Während dieser Zeit hatte er seine Nachforschungen unablässig betrieben, täglich mindestens fünfzehn Stunden gearbeitet und sich oft, wie er mir versicherte, fünf Tage hintereinander ausschliesslich der ihm gestellten Aufgabe gewidmet. Der grossartige Erfolg seiner Bemühungen konnte die Folgen einer so furchtbaren Ueberanstrengung nicht von ihm abwenden; während ganz Europa vom Ruhm seines Namens widerhallte und er von allen Seiten mit Dankschreiben und Glückwunschdepeschen überschüttet wurde, fand ich ihn in einem Zustand tiefster Niedergeschlangenheit. Was die Polizei dreier Länder vergebens versuchte, war ihm gelungen — er hatte dem vollendetsten Schwindler von ganz Europa in die Karten gesehen und ihm das Handwerk gelegt; aber nicht einmal dies Bewusstsein vermochte ihn aus seiner völligen Erschlaffung aufzurütteln.
Schon nach drei Tagen langten wir zusammen wieder in der Bakerstrasse an, aber bald stellte sich heraus, dass Holmes dringend eine Luftveränderung brauchte, und auch für mich hatte der Gedanke, eine Woche im Frühling auf dem Lande zuzubringen, grossen Reiz.
