Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, in 1859. Before starting his writing career, Doyle attended medical school, where he met the professor who would later inspire his most famous creation, Sherlock Holmes. A Study in Scarlet was Doyle's first novel; he would go on to write more than sixty stories featuring Sherlock Holmes. He died in England in 1930.

Die drei Studenten.
Es war im Jahre 1895, als uns der Gang von Ereignissen, auf die ich hier nicht näher eingehen will, veranlasste, ein paar Wochen in einer unserer bedeutendsten und ältesten Universitätsstädte zuzubringen. In dieser Zeit passierte aber nebenbei eine kleine eigenartige Geschichte, die ich jetzt erzählen will. Ich brauche dabei wohl kaum besonders zu bemerken, dass ich irgendwelche Angaben, aus denen der Leser, auf die wirkliche Begebenheit schliessen könnte, vermeiden muss, denn es würde sonst ungerecht und beleidigend sein, und es ist besser, wenn man über einen so peinlichen Vorfall Gras wachsen lässt. Bei der nötigen Diskretion kann man jedoch das Vorkommnis selbst wohl mitteilen, und ich möchte dies daher nicht unterlassen, besonders auch, weil sich dabei die hervorragendsten Fähigkeiten meines Freundes Sherlock Holmes wieder einmal in glänzender Weise zeigten.
Wir bewohnten damals ein paar möblierte Zimmer in der Nähe einer Bibliothek, wo Holmes eifrig alte englische Schriften studierte und zu dermassen überraschenden Resultaten kam, dass ich dieser Sache gewiss später noch einmal ein besonderes Kapitel widmen werde.
Eines Abends, als wir von einem Spaziergang am Flussufer heimgekehrt waren und rauchend auf unserem Zimmer sassen, klopfte es plötzlich an der Tür, und herein trat ein bekannter, wegen seines wissenschaftlichen Rufes hochangesehener Professor vom St. Lucas College.
Er war ein grosser, magerer Mann von nervösem, leicht erregbarem Temperament. Ich hatte ihn nie anders als unruhig gesehen, aber diesmal befand er sich doch in einem solch hohen Grade der Erregung, dass entschieden etwas Aussergewöhnliches geschehen sein musste.
„Sie müssen mir ein paar Stunden Ihrer kostbaren Zeit opfern, Herr Holmes, platzte er los. „In meinem College ist uns etwas sehr Unangenehmes passiert, und ich wüsste, wenn Sie nicht zufällig hier wären, wahrhaftig nicht, was ich anfangen sollte. Sie allein, Herr Holmes, können mir helfen.
„Ich bin gerade in diesen Tagen sehr beschäftigt und kann keine Ablenkung brauchen, erwiderte meint Freund. „Ich rate Ihnen daher, lieber polizeiliche Hilfe in Anspruch zu nehmen.
„Nein, nein, mein lieber Herr," entgegnete der Professor, „das ist vollständig unmöglich. Sobald man eine Sache der Polizei übergeben hat, kann man sie nicht mehr, zurückziehen, und
