About this ebook

In an open field on the edge of a wooded area, Demonte Williams is found dead. Ricky Magee is also there, passed out in a pickup truck, and appears to be the murderer. This has all the signs of an open and shut case. But it's rarely that simple

In his second big case, Defense Attorney Monroe T. Lovett will discover those things some wish to keep hidden, concealed from the public.

Monroe will have to weave through racial tension mixed with murder up in the small Southern town as he defends his client, Ricky Magee, in what appears to be an open and shut case. On the surface, the evidence seems rock-solid. Demonte Williams was a young African American man and someone Magee claims was a friend. Deputies found Magee groggy and claiming to have no memory of how he got there. Both men have evidence indicating that they were in a fight. But Magee maintains his innocence, despite the vast amount of evidence stacked against him.

Nerves are on edge with the arrival of a national civil rights leader, Rev. Charles Louis, who brings his brand of justice. He takes the Williams family under his arms as he calls for support and protests. Reverend Louis wants Magee prosecuted as a racist, and local prosecutor Robert Breaux agrees with him, charging Magee with a hate crime.

The Peregrine town square becomes ground zero for the KKK, Black Panthers, and other racial activists and fanatics. The media enters the chaos, adding fuel to the fire. Why is there such a strong reaction to a small-town murder? Because Demonte Williams, a black man, was hanging from a tree. And Ricky Magee is a white man. Race becomes the number one motive. However, as Monroe studies the evidence, he soon realized that something's not right, but getting to the truth will require risk.

Tensions rise between almost everyone involved. Debbie, Monroe's wife, questions his reasons for taking the case. Herm has his doubts about Magee's innocence. Across the aisle, the prosecuting team is butting heads with each other and finding Reverend Louis's constant interference annoying. Not to be left out, Judge Harper, an African American, is caught in the middle as he engages in an intense argument with Louis.

Needing this conviction, Reverend Louis paints a target on Monroe, trying to stop him by whatever means necessary. He needs Magee convicted of this crime.

A new face joins the prosecution. District Attorney Breaux has added a new assistant district attorney to his staff, Adrienne Scott. She's a headstrong young lawyer who will do whatever it takes to attain her goals, especially if it means crushing Monroe Lovett. And she sees Reverend Louis as someone vital in helping her achieve the success she desires.

But Magee's hopes fade as he sits before a mostly African American jury and judge. He is ready to face his fate; however, Monroe assures him that the truth will free him. A glimmer of hope comes when a mysterious man offers a piece of evidence that can prove Magee is innocent. There's only one problem; the evidence is hidden somewhere in a mountain of notes and photographs. Monroe, Debbie, and Herm will have to find the proof, or Magee might receive the death penalty.
