Die exotisch anmutenden Schönheiten Japans sind offensichtlich. Aber die Faszination dieses Landes der 7000 Inseln versteckt sich oft auch im Kleinen, Beiläufigen, leicht Übersehenen. Und es ist klar, dass dieses Land der Extreme viele Geheimnisse besitzt, die wir Europäer vermutlich nie verstehen werden.

Japan ist anders. Ganz anders als die meisten Länder. Obwohl man im 20. Jahrhundert viel über Nippon erfahren hat, ist dieser Inselstaat immer noch schwer zu verstehen, schwierig zu entschlüsseln. Für mich ist Japan das exotischste Land, das ich kenne. Ungeheuer futuristisch ausgerichtet auf der einen Seite und unglaublich vergangenheitszugewandt auf der anderen. Ein solcher Gegensatz würde eine europäische Gesellschaft vermutlich spalten und auseinanderreißen. Nicht so Japan. Dort geht die Moderne mit der Tradition Hand in Hand.
Das eine Japan gibt es nicht. Es gibt unzählig viele. Und alle faszinieren auf ihre ganz eigene Art und Weise. Es ist nicht möglich, diesem Land in knapp 100 Fotos gerecht zu werden. Man bräuchte mindestens die zehnfache Zahl. Trotzdem besteht die Hoffnung, eine Andeutung von dem, was Japan ausmacht, wiedergegeben zu haben. Was man nicht fotografieren kann, ist Stille. Japan ist ein stilles Land. Selbst wenn der Großraum Tokio die bevölkerungsreichste Region der Welt ist.
