Origin, physique and appearance
Bolonka Franzuska = French lapdog
In Russia, the small, cute Bolonka Zwetna has its origin, however, its historical story is not completely handed down. However, it is certain that in the 18th century the French high nobility discovered Maltese-like doggies for themselves. They were comparable to the French Bichon. Their function was to accompany the noble ladies and served as jewelry
. They were in great demand. In the 18th century, France's relations with the Czar's court were very good and so the Bolonka Zwetna was slowly introduced to Russia. According to history, even Catherine the Great owned several white Bolonka Zwetnas.
The French Revolution with its consequences for the little dogs
Towards the end of the 18th century, when the French Revolution had almost reached its end, the Bolonka Franzuska almost died out. The reason for this was that the majority of the nobility had not survived and so the small white dogs also disappeared. With only a few Bolonkas, breeding continued in Russia to preserve this dog breed.
The white noble dog
developed into a beloved animal of the population
When the Second World War was over, the interest in Russia in the new dog breed increased and the little whirlwind gained the upper hand. However, due to the exact mating, which in the beginning was limited only to the appearance, a certain type of dog developed over time. This was also necessary to produce an independent breed, independent from the Bolonka Franzuska. In 1958 this was achieved and the first multicolored dog under the breed name Bolonka
was registered in the studbook of the LHFS. The condition was that the breed Russkaya Tsvetnaya Bolonka
was allowed to have all coat colors, but not pure white
. In 1997 the Russian Kennel Federation
finally confirmed the standard for the dog breed Bolonka Zwetna
.
Interestingly, the Bolonka Zwetna is not recognized by the FCI (Fédération Cynologique Internationale), but by the RKF, which belongs to the FCI and works together with it. Only in 2011, the Verband für das Deutsche Hundewesen
also recognized this breed nationwide. The breeders from Russia are very keen to fulfill all the requirements to have the Bolonka Zwetna recognized by the FCI as well.
The Bolonka belongs to the small dog breeds and has a withers height of about 24-26 cm. It weighs up to five kilograms and has a stable body structure. The head is of medium size and is somewhat rounded. His neck is of medium length to the whole proportion and gives the animal a perfect posture. The ears hang down close to the head. The cute face with beady eyes gives the animal a special charm that hardly anyone can resist.
The coat of the Bolonka Zwetna can be of various colors, from pure white, cream, champagne to apricot and fox red. There is no characteristic coat color for this dog breed, as new colors are constantly being produced due to breeding. So every little Bolonka puppy is unique and the coat is never monochromatic. The coat itself is very dense, silky and soft. It is slightly wavy or curly.
