Origin, physique and appearance of the Magyar Vizsla
The Hungarian pointing dog in portrait
Originally from Hungary, the Magyar Vizsla is an extremely popular hunting dog in Germany. There are two types: a short-haired and a wire-haired version. In this dog guide, you will learn about the origin of the Magyar Vizsla, its traits and how to keep such a sensitive dog. In addition, it describes everything you need to know about keeping it.
The history of the Magyar Vizsla
The country of origin of these popular dogs is Hungary and their history dates back to the 18th century. The direct ancestors of the Magyar Vizsla are the Magyar dogs. The Magyars were a Eurasian equestrian people in earlier times. The yellowish to almost golden color of the dogs was perfect to hide in the steppe grass or grain fields when hunting. Over the years, the Magyar Vizslas interbred with the Pannonian Bracken, the Turkish Pointing Dog and the Sloughy, which also lived in Hungary. They were mainly used for hunting waterfowl, hares and pheasants. Due to the ever-increasing emergence of various pointing dogs in the European area, the Magyars were displaced and were on the verge of extinction. Already in winter 1916 the breeders were alarmed and initiated the rescue of these pointing dogs. In 1936 the breed of the Hungarian pointing dog was officially recognized by the FCI (World Canine Federation). In order to eventually preserve the breed, breeders crossed it with Hanoverian Welding Dogs, the German Shorthair and with the English Pointer. Crossing with the German Wirehair resulted in the Wirehaired Vizslas, which was also recognized by the FCI in 1965. Both types of this breed are included in the FCI group 7, the pointing dogs
.
What does the Magyar Vizsla look like?
This breed is very elegant and has an athletic, muscular physique that looks like painted. The dog has a straight back and its proportions are in harmony. The nose of the hunting dog is straight and also has wide nostrils. This enables him to more easily pick up the scent of his prey.
The lively brown eyes are always alert and the long hanging ears lie close to the head. The wiry or even smooth coat of the Vizsla is short and shines in various shades of semi yellow. Sometimes the animals have smaller white patches. The coat texture in the short haired species is very dense and shiny. In the wire-haired type, on the other hand, the coat stands straight and is rather wiry.

The Magyar Vizsla breed is a time-honored hunting dog. He is especially popular in rural areas. But for several years he has become more and more in demand as a dog for city apartments. Even with his innate hunting instinct he has no problems to live in an apartment, but he needs enough exercise.
The dog breeds recognized by the FCI each as self-sufficient, differ in the following characteristic:
Magyar Vizsla Wirehaired: wirehaired Hungarian Pointing Dog
Magyar Vizsla Shorthair: short-haired Hungarian pointing dog
The body weight is approximately 18 to 29 kilograms. The Magyar Vizsla is known for its light and graceful body.
The short-haired Hungarian Pointing Dog:
The stature of this dog has good proportions. It is slender and yet muscular. The body length is a little longer than the height at the withers. With a good and nutritious feeding and a good state of training, he keeps his well-shaped body.
The head has a medium width and a faint furrow on the forehead, the eyebrows are easily recognizable. The eyes have a normal size and are almond-shaped, from which a lively gaze attentively observes the surroundings. The eye color is mostly brown.
If the Shorthaired Vizsla is healthy and vigorous, this is expressed, among other things, in its coat, which has an almost metallic sheen in the sunshine. The color shades range
