      This unusual dog is also called lion dog. This has a very special background, which you will learn in the further course of this guide.

      However, this animal belongs only in absolutely experienced hands, he is not a beginner dog. If you are interested in this beautiful breed, you should keep this in mind and refrain from buying it if you have never owned a dog before and therefore do not have any basic knowledge about dogs. The attitude, education and a healthy diet of this breed can be called very demanding.

      Therefore, this guide is intended to help you get an overview of whether the Rhodesian Ridgeback is suitable for you and your family.

      The Rhodesian Ridgeback

      his extraordinary canine beauty originated in South Africa, but for years it has been spreading more and more in America and Europe. The Rhodesian Ridgeback is a very proud, courageous, but nevertheless with much gentleness equipped dog, which promises unconditional loyalty to its humans, why its fan community also constantly grows. However, in order to keep a Ridgie in a species-appropriate way, the future owner should have some experience with dogs, because this breed is very special and not for beginners. This guide is about this knowledge around the Rhodesian Ridgeback, so that you can find out for yourself whether this dog is the right one for you.

      Breed specific characteristics

      This breed owes its name to the eel line running down its back. Within this stripe, the coat is raised and grows against the grain, that is, from the back to the front. It begins directly behind the shoulders, becomes narrower towards the back and ends here as well. Because the hair in this area is raised, this dog got the name Ridgeback (ridge back), and because of his origin, today's Zimbabwe, which was called Rhodesia at that time, the full name Rhodesian Ridgeback came into being. This ridge on the back is the trademark of the Rhodesian Ridgeback. According to the breed description, this stripe should not be wider than five centimeters.

      The physique is very muscular and geared to good agility. This still testifies from his original activity as a lion hunter in Africa. A male reaches about a shoulder height of 70 cm, while the females can grow up to 65 cm. The males of the creation are up to 36 kg and the ladies bring up to 32 kg on the scale.

      The short and smooth coat is mostly wheat colored. It varies from light shades of white to red shades of white. According to the breed standard, white or black hairs are only allowed on the chest or toes and here also only in a very small amount, i.e. not as large patches. Often also the muzzle and the hangings are dark colored, but this must not be too much.

      The Rhodesian Ridgeback is a late developer. This means that it can take up to three years for the dog to reach adulthood. Only then he has reached his full mental and physical maturity.

      The character of the Rhodesian Ridgeback is very versatile, which is why he always arouses the interest of dog lovers. He is very temperamental and headstrong. His cleverness is outstanding, how else could he have taken on wild lions in earlier times? In addition, his loyalty to his human is unsurpassable. Whoever can call this dog his own and has managed to give him the right education, has really found a friend for life. The Rhodesian Ridgeback is a very people-oriented dog and has a balanced nature. However, he is very temperamental, which makes dealing with him not always easy.

      The Rhodesian Ridgeback is very territorial and defends everything that belongs to his home with great self-confidence. This behavior must be steered in the right direction to be able to control it, but its very sensitive nature must also be taken into account. If the Ridgie is properly trained, he is an excellent protector for house, yard and family. Aggressiveness is unknown to this dog, he would never attack without feeling threatened himself. Dogs and people he does not know, he approaches with reserve, but is not shy at all, but rather curious. Even if it seems otherwise, the Rhodesian Ridgeback has everything in view and watches over his family. If danger threatens, he is immediately at their side. These characteristics are typical for the Rhodesian Ridgeback breed.

      Since the Rhodesian Ridgeback finds its origin in Africa, it has a relatively thin coat. This affects especially the belly. Since in Europe the climate is sometimes quite harsh and cold, your Ridgie could quickly freeze. Always provide a warm place in the house for him to warm up quickly, and when you are out in the fresh air with him, please do not let him stand in one place for a long time, but make sure he gets plenty of exercise. Even though the Rhodesian Ridgeback doesn't fit this stereotype at all... but a dog coat could be quite appropriate (it doesn't have to be made of pink plush). Nevertheless, his coat is very easy to care for and only needs to be brushed out every now and then, provided there is no major dirt.

      Its use as a hunting dog in Germany has come to an end, because here it is not licensed as such. But in many other countries of the world he is still used as a very successful hunting dog. In our country he is appreciated as a good watchdog and also in the family the Rhodesian Ridgeback has found his place.

      This breed is very versatile in use. So he can be trained excellently as a guide dog and also as a guard dog or in the service of the police he shines with his typical characteristics. Within the family, the Rhodesian Ridgeback is also becoming more and more popular, because he is characterized by his intelligence and the associated eagerness to learn. Due to his urge to move, the Ridgie can run along excellently on the bicycle or even next to the horse.

      This dog wants to belong. Within his family he is very affectionate and extremely loyal. Living together with children is also possible without any problems, because he shows a lot of tolerance towards them and is very calm and affectionate. Nevertheless, children in general must be taught how to handle a dog, so that they recognize him just as lovingly and do not inadvertently cause him any harm.

      Should you encounter other dogs on walks, the Rhodesian Ridgeback proves to be very compatible. However, he should be well socialized in puppyhood, then he will have no problems with other four-legged friends and can hardly be involved in a confrontation. However, if his opponent comes to him stupidly, he is inclined to defend himself, and then does not shrink back from a confrontation.

      The Rhodesian Ridgeback does not really have any problems with other animals living in the household, but he should be confronted with them already in puppyhood. If practiced early and intensively, even a kitten, bunny or guinea pig can enrich the household without being seen as prey. If you would like to make a socialization only when your dog is already older, then you must observe the reunion very carefully. Your African is and remains a hunting dog and in case of doubt you should rather do without another additional pet.

      Typical for the Rhodesian Ridgeback is his eagerness to run. Here you must plan some time and also be able to spare, otherwise you should refrain from the acquisition of this lion dog. At least three hours a day your Ridgie wants to be out and about with you and explore the surroundings. You can let him run along well at the wheel and if you belong to the riders, he also likes to run along at the horse. But the head also wants to work and you should encourage him here. There are many dog sports that are suitable for a Rhodesian Ridgeback, here especially the Mantrailing. What this is, you will learn in a later chapter.

      As you have already read, your Rhodesian Ridgeback comes from Africa and was used here for lion hunting and also bred that way. So he has an innate, natural hunting instinct. Of course, he should not act out this instinct by going hunting with you. This would also be forbidden in Germany. But you can not wean your dog from this hunting instinct, if it should appear, because it is genetically determined. But in order to keep this behavior under control and to stop it at least during normal walks, you should look for a suitable dog sport with your four-legged friend, so that he can let off steam here. You will get more information later which sports are suitable for your Ridgie.

      At the VDH, the German Kennel Club, the Ridgie is listed under the standard number 146 and is listed in the FCI group 6 for running dogs, bloodhounds and related breeds of section 3 without working test. The tasks of the VDH and the FCI will be explained to you in more detail in the next chapter.

      VDH and FCI - what is it?

      The German Canine Association (VDH) is an interest group for dog owners in Germany with now over 600,000 members. Everything that generally concerns the dog finds a contact here. The VDH has 180 member clubs and has been doing so for more than 100 years.

      The various breeding associations that belong to the VDH list more than 250 dog breeds here. These must comply with appropriate breed standards in order to be approved for breeding. Thus, great importance is attached to the health of the breeding dogs and also to animal welfare.

      As a single person you cannot appear as a member in the VDH. You must have a membership in a dog sports association or dog breeding club that belongs to the VDH.

      For Germany, the VDH is represented in the world federation of cynology, the Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI). In the FCI, 99 countries are registered as members, whereby each country may only provide one association.

      The FCI recognizes a total of 352 different dog breeds. This means mutual recognition of pedigrees and the judges used.  Each of these breeds receives a breed standard, which prescribes how the appearance and behavior of a breed should be. Only pedigree dogs that meet these standards are listed in the FCI. The member association in which the breed originates is responsible
