XI PHYSICS UNIT TEST Motion in One Dimension - Solutions Marks: 25 1.

. Under what Condition the magnitude of average velocity of a particle is equal to the average speed? (1 Mark) (Ans) The magnitude of the average velocity of a particle is equal to the average speed if it moves with constant velocity in a straight line. 2. What will be the nature of velocity-time graph for a uniform motion? (1 Mark) (Ans) Velocity-time graph will be parallel to time axis. 3. Can a body have Constant speed but a varying Velocity? (1 Mark) (Ans) Yes; if direction changes continuously. 4. Draw the position time graphs for two objects initially occupying different positions but having zero relative velocity. (2 Marks) (Ans) The position time graphs for two objects initially occupying different positions but having zero relative velocity are parallel to each other.

5. A train moves from point A to B with speed of 50km/hr and returns back from B to A with speed of 40 km/hr. Calculate average speed and average velocity. (2 Marks) (Ans) Let distance AB= X km.

Given, speed = 50 km/h Time taken from A to B = t1 t1 = (X/50) hr Time taken from B to A t2 = (X/40) hr Average speed = Total distance/Total time = (X + X)/[ (X/50) + (X/40)] =( 2X / 9X )x 200 =( 400/9 )km/hr Average velocity = Total displacement / Total time = 0. 6. A ball thrown vertically upwards with a speed of 19.6 ms-1 from the top of building returns to the earth in 6 seconds. Find the height of tower. (2 Marks) (Ans) Taking vertical downward motion of the ball from point of projection up to ground, we have

7. On taking a turn, a motorist speeding up at 44 ms1 finds a child on the road 100 m ahead. He immediately stops the engine and applied the brakes to stop it 1 m away from the child. Compute time required to stop it. (2 marks) (Ans)

8. The diagram shows the time-acceleration graph for a particle in rectilinear motion. What will be its average acceleration in first twenty seconds. (3

marks)

(Ans)

9. A moving body travels a distance of 2 m in 2 seconds and 2.2 m in next 4 seconds. What will be the velocity of the body at the end of 7 th second from the start? (3 marks) (Ans) Here, case (i) S = 2m, t =2s Case (ii) S = 2 + 2.2 = 4.2 m, t = 2 + 4 = 6s Let u and a be the initial velocity

and uniform acceleration of the body

10. Two balls are thrown simultaneously one vertically upwards with speed of 20m/s from the ground and other vertically downwards from height of 40m with same speed and in same line of motion. Determine the point where they will collide. (3 Marks) (Ans) Suppose two balls meet at height 'X' above ground after time t sec. from start. For upward motion, u= 20m/s, g= - 9.8m/s2 From 2nd equation of kinematics, s = ut + 1/2at2 X = 20t - 1/2(9.8 t2) or,X = 20t 4.9 t2...........(1) For downward motion: 40 - X = 20t + 4.9 t2..........(2) Adding equ(1) & (2), we get, 40t = 40, t = 1 sec.

From equ(1) X = 20 4.9 or,X = 15.1m. Both balls collide after 1 sec at height 15.1 above the ground. 11. Derive the equations of motion v = u + at and v2 u2 = 2as by calculus. (5 Marks) (Ans) Consider an object moving along a st. line with uniform acceleration a. Let u be the initial velocity of the object at time , t=0 and v be the final velocity of the object after time t. Acceleration, a = (dv/dt) or, dv = a.dt (1)Velocity-time relation: Let at instant time, t, dv be the change in velocityin time interval dt. Integrating , within the condition of motion (i.e. time from 0 to t and velocity from u to v ), we get,
