Lesson Plan STARHUB-CENTRAL SINGAPORE NURTURE PROGRAMME NURTUREPLUS LESSON 8: R CONTROLLED VOWELS Part 1 Duration 10 minutes Lesson READING

FLUENCY Objective: To check / monitor students progress in reading 1. Teacher recaps previous lesson taught and get student response. 2. Ask each student to read the book aloud. 3. Teacher checks reading of each student. While student reads: 1. Teacher corrects any mistakes made. 2. Students write down words not read correctly in their notebook /worksheet. 3. While teacher is assessing a particular student, the rest will read on their own while waiting for their turn. Materials Reading Material: Own PM+ Level books for each group (depends on proficiency level of each student group) 1 set for teacher, 1 for pupil Notebook / Worksheet for each pupil

WORD STUDY Objective: Students will learn about some rcontrolled vowel patterns and how the presence of r changes the sound of the vowels. 1. Write some words like fat, cat and put on the whiteboard / flip chart. 2. Engage student response by asking how each word sounds. 3. Correct student pronunciation. 4. Erase the last letter from the words above and replace with r to become far, car and purr. 5. Engage student response by asking them on the pronunciation and correct student mistakes (if any). 6. Introduce the r-controlled vowel patterns and explain how the r changes the sound of the vowel before it. (bossy r changes the vowel sound) Whiteboard / Flip chart (to explain as a large group) / Small magnetic boards (to explain in small groups) Teacher Resource: Lesson 8 Student Worksheet: Lesson 8

Write some other r-controlled vowel patterns (refer to given list) and go through the pronunciation of each word. 8. Make each student pronounce each word taking turns each time. 9. Wrap up this part of the lesson by highlighting the role of the r-controlled vowel words and make students write some of the words onto their worksheet.

INSTRUCTIONAL READING Objective: Students will learn the importance of characters in a story. Before reading: 1. Pass the books to students. 2. Engage student interest by asking them to focus on the title and picture. 3. Make students guess what the main characters are making in the story. 4. Discuss student answers.

Reading Material: Own PM+ Level books for each group (depends on proficiency level of each student group) HA: The Chocolate Cake (Level 19) MA: Locked In (Level 13) LA: Joe Makes a House (Level 10)

Reading: Student Worksheet: 1. Make students read books in their own Lesson 8 groups. 2. Get student response on what they think of the item / thing the characters made in the books they read. After reading: 1. Get students to come up with their own version of the things (by coming up with a recipe for the cake and materials needed to build a doll house and a bird cage.) 2. Draw up their version of the finished product. 3. Put up student work around the class and make students do a gallery walk to comment and compare their work. 4. Commend and comment on student work.

WRITING Objective: Students will improve writing fluency 1. Review the r-controlled vowel words learnt in the lesson and encourage students to write as many words as they can remember from the words they have seen or read. 2. Ask each student to read the words they have written and share to the class. 3. Monitor and help students with their spelling and pronunciation. 4. Reward students who can come up with the most number of words in the shortest time possible. Student Worksheet: Lesson 8

30 minutes BOARD GAMES Objective: Students will reinforce their understanding in topics taught (in this lesson or previous) by engaging in educational games. 1. Hand out games appropriate to each level. 2. Monitor students progress and understanding in games. 3. Encourage student participation by participating in games as well. 4. Wrap up lesson by highlighting what students have learnt. Any games students have not played before.
