Lesson Plan STARHUB-CENTRAL SINGAPORE NURTURE PROGRAMME NURTUREPLUS LESSON 19: SUFFIX (LESS AND FUL) Part 1 Duration

10 minutes Lesson READING FLUENCY Objective: To check / monitor students progress in reading and instil in students that reading is a fun experience. 1. Hand out the poems to students. 2. Sample a reading of the poems with the right intonation and expression. 3. Get students to follow way of reading. 4. Make students dramatize the fly as it flies or the cat when it smiles. While a particular student reads: 1. Teacher encourages student to read with expression. 2. The rest will practise on their own while waiting for their turn. 10 minutes

WORD STUDY Objective: Students will be learn about the concept of suffixes and know 2 forms of suffixes. 1. Introduce the idea of suffix by showing students some words with suffixes e.g. mouthful and headless. 2. Get students response on what they think is the meaning of the words. 3. Break up the words above into root word and suffixes. 4. Explain to students that suffixes appear at the end of some words and it changes the original meanings of the root words. 5. Inform students the suffixes they are going to learn (less and ful) and inform them the meanings of the suffixes. 6. Write 3 other root words on the board and engage student interaction by Whiteboard / Flip chart (to explain as a large group) / Small magnetic boards (to explain in small groups) Teacher Resource: Lesson 19 Student Worksheet: Lesson 19

Add a suffix to the words and get students to guess the meaning. 8. Engage student participation by getting them to write the answers to the words given on their worksheets. 9. Guide student work and correct student mistakes.

INSTRUCTIONAL READING Objective: Students will recall past experiences when they lost something that is treasured by them and recall their feelings. Before reading: 1. Pass the books to students. 2. Engage student interest by asking them to guess what the story is about by looking at the title. Reading: 1. Make students read books in their own groups. 2. Ask students to write difficult words encountered on their worksheet. 3. Make students focus on the incidents that involve the lost items in the story and how the characters felt. After reading: 1. Encourage students to guess the meanings of new / difficult words learnt from storybook. 2. Go through meanings of the words with the students. 3. Get student response on the feelings felt by the characters in story when they lost their item / animal. 4. Jot down the points on their worksheet. 5. Encourage students to recall past experiences where they experienced a

WRITING Objective: Students will improve writing fluency 1. Encourage students to write down as many words with the suffix less and ful that they have seen in the lesson. (without looking at page2) 2. Time students as they do so and commend students who are able to list the most number of words within the given time. Student Worksheet: Lesson 19

BOARD GAMES Objective: Students will reinforce their understanding in topics taught by engaging in educational games. 1. Students will play any games they have not played before. 2. Encourage student participation by playing the game with them. Any board games provided.
