    LMB is pleased to announce a new initiative that will provide up to three trainings a year for Law Enforcement personnel and bicyclists. These trainings will be in different parts of the state in order to make them available to a wider audience. The training listed in the panel next to this article is our first training as part of this initiative. The training is MCOLES registered so officers receive credit for attending. We are using the October training as a pilot for our efforts in 2013. We are extremely fortunate to have Kathy Vonk as our Trainer for these workshops. Kathy has been a police officer in Ann Arbor since 1988 and is the co-owner of LouKa Tactical Training. She holds instructor certifications through the International Police Mountain Bike Association (IPMBA), the Law Enforcement Bicycle Association, the League of American Bicyclists, and the U.S. Department of Transportation (Community Oriented Bicycle Safety Instructor for Law Enforcement). She is a graduate of the United Bicycle Institute. She has served on the IPMBA Board and Education Committee, and is currently on the League of Michigan Bicyclists Education Committee. She has provided instructional courses on the local, national and international levels for both law enforcement and civilians. She has written articles in numerous publications including Law and Order, Tactical Response, The Tactical Edge, The Complete Guide to Public Safety Cycling 2nd Ed., the IPMBA Newsletter, and she wrote the “Model Policy for Police Bicycle Patrol,” and “Concepts and Issues” paper for the International Association of Chiefs of Police. She has presented at numerous international training conferences including NTOA, NSCA, Team One Network Instructor Conference, OPOTA, IAWP, IPMBA, IALEFI, ILEETA, and ASLET. It is our hope that bicycle clubs, bike shops, and local coalitions will take advantage of these training opportunities for law enforcement personnel by sponsoring one or more officers from their area to attend the training. We have kept the fees at a bare minimum, enough to simply cover our costs. As we move towards 2013 we are looking for clubs, shops, or local coalitions that would like to host one of the three trainings in 2013. If you are interested please contact Rich either by phone at (888) 642-4537 or by email at rich@LMB.org. Although the trainings are aimed primarily at law enforcement, individual bicyclists are welcome to attend and encouraged to do so. At the end of the workshop there will be a session dedicated to an open discussion about real world issues that bicyclists in the audience face and how they should/could be addressed by law enforcement.
