Reading Racers

Weekly Assignments
*Packets go home Monday and are turned in on Friday. Monday- Practice reading racersanyway you choose (write, flash cards, ect.) Tuesday- Draw a picture of your family. Have mom or dad help you label your picture. Wednesday- Practice writing your name 3 times with only 1 capital letter. Thursday- Draw a picture of 3 things we use at school, and sing the alphabet 3 times to a family member.

We are beginning our reading racers program this week. This program is to help our students read and spell the words that are the most common in our language. Each Monday your child will bring home a set of cards that they need to learn. We will test your child on those cards the following Friday. If the child is able to read the cards on Friday then they will get a congratulations certificate and they will be given a new list to learn. If they did not master their list by Friday they will continue with the same list the following week. This program will only work with help from home. Please plan to spend at least 5 minutes a day working on these cards with your child. I will not always tell you to practice these cards in your childs homework packet. Please practice these cards on your own at home. A letter explaining the program in more detail will be sent home with your childs reading racers on Monday. Thank you for your participation.

What we are learning:

Reading This week we will be reviewing the alphabet. We will be working on our handwriting, and the correct way to write letters and numbers. We will also begin introducing the sight word the, me, you. Math We will complete a brief preview of the math concepts to come this year, and then begin our unit on sorting objects into categories Social Studies This week we will be learning about the importance of rules and laws in the classroom as well as the community.

*Please read with your child every night. Doing so gives them a head start at learning to read.
