Above-grade-level testing: What is it?

By Carol Mills, Ph.D.

Above-grade-level testing is what makes CTYs Talent Search and testing different from the testing that students usually encounter. Typically, students will take a test designed for a student his or her age or grade. This is true even for admission into a schools gifted and talented program.

I. Above-grade-level testing is useful for the following reasons

1. Very bright students often perform at the top percentiles* on grade-level tests. When student score at the top percentiles, the tests may be imprecise measures of true ability. Why? Because students with these scores have hit the ceiling of the test. The test cant discern if the student has reached his or her level of ability, or if he/she could correctly answer even more difficult questions. 2. When students at the top percentiles take an abovegrade-level test, the resulting scores spread out into an (approximately) normal distribution. In other words, a curve develops, with most students performing at the middle, and fewer at the low and high ends. This result highlights that students who originally scored at the top percentiles on grade-level tests were not all the same with respect to their abilities (or their academic needs). 3. The higher ceiling of an above-grade-level test allows us to test the limits of a students ability. For many highly able students, this is the first time that they can see and appreciate the full extent of their own abilities. 4. Above-grade-level testing identifies students with the highest level of academic ability who have the greatest need for advanced-level and fast-paced course work.

II. More ways the tests are useful

Good standardized test scores are objective measures of a childs ability. They are not influenced by a teachers individual perception of a student, the good student bias, or parental aspirations for their child. With respect to above-grade-level tests, research done by the Center shows that strong scores on such tests are highly predictive of a students ability to succeed in advanced-level courses. The SAT, in particular, is a highly reliable, valid indicator of a students current level of academic ability. The SAT assesses reasoning skills and all the more so for CTYs students because most of our students take the SAT before they have been exposed to the level of content on the exam. Research studies conducted by CTY and the Educational Testing Service (ETS) confirm the reliability, validity, and appropriateness of the SAT for the students in our Talent Search. Similar research supports the validity and appropriateness of the ACT and the School and College Ability Test (SCAT) for the students in CTYs Talent Search.

*CTY conducted its original research with students at the 97th percentile or higher, and our Talent Search now includes students at the 95th percentile and higher.

TEST SECTIONS AND QUESTIONS The SAT includes three sections: The critical reading questions measure how well students understand what they read using sentence completion and passage-based reading questions. There are 67 multiple-choice questions in this section. The mathematics questions assess students ability to apply math concepts, solve problems, and understand charts, tables, and graphs. Students do not need to memorize formulasthey are provided. There are 44 multiple-choice questions and 10 questions that ask students to fill in their own answers. The writing questions ask students to communicate ideas clearly and effectively and apply the rules of standard written English. There are 49 multiple-choice questions in addition to the essay question. Please note that CTY does not consider the writing section score for its programs. TEST TIMING The total testing time for the SAT (not including breaks or setup time) is 3 hours and 45 minutes. The 25-minute essay will always be the first subsection of the SAT, followed by six 25-minute subsections and two 20-minute sections. The test always ends with a 10-minute multiple-choice writing subsection. There are three 5-minute breaks during the test: one after the second subsection, one after the fourth subsection, and one after the sixth subsection. Note: Students may have snacks and drinks during the breaks in designated areas only. SCORING Each section of the SAT is scored on a scale of 200 800. For the writing, each essay is scored independently by two readers. One of the 25-minute subsections does not count toward the final score. This unscored subsection, known as the variable or equating subsection, may be a critical reading, mathematics, or multiple-choice writing subsection.

Test type: Computerized Test length: 60 75 minutes Test sections: Quantitative and Verbal Testing dates: By appointment July 1 June 30 Test locations: Prometric test centers Test fee: Fees vary by country Receive test results by mail: From CTY 5 weeks after test View test results in MyCTY: 5 business days after test HIGHLIGHTS Shortest testing time Convenient optionfastest way to get results if attempting to qualify for CTY online or summer programs ABOUT THE TE ST Since 1985, the Center for Talented Youth has identified talented students in elementary grades using the School and College Ability Test (SCAT). In May 1996, CTY purchased all rights to the SCAT from ETS and entered into an agreement with Prometric to computerize the SCAT and make the test available at computer test centers. Because this is an above-grade-level test, after the test, youll receive information that shows how your childs scores compare to that of students in his or her grade as well as students in the higher grades for whom the test questions were originally designed.

TEST SECTIONS AND QUESTIONS The SCAT test has two sections, verbal and quantitative. Each section contains 55 questions, including five unidentified experimental items that do not count toward the students score. The verbal section measures a students understanding of the meaning of words and verbal reasoning ability. Verbal questions are multiple-choice analogies, which require a student to choose the best pair of words to complete an analogy. Often, there may appear to be more than one answer that fits the analogy, but the correct answer is the one that best completes the analogy. The quantitative section measures a students understanding of fundamental number operations. The quantitative questions are multiple-choice mathematical comparisons, which require a student to compare two mathematical quantities and determine which is greater. Problems are intended to measure mathematical reasoning ability and thus often do not require computation. TEST TIMING The two sections are each 22 minutes long, with additional time for tutorials. They are separated by an optional, student-directed 10-minute break. Student-directed means that the test center administrator will not start and end the break. It is the students responsibility to return to the test on time. If students take any other breaks during the test, timing will continue. Your appointment time will be for 90 minutes, but testing will usually take less than one hour. The maximum time for the test is 54 minutes, including the optional break. Note: Parents must remain at the test center during testing. Parents of testing students will need an ID. SCORING The SCAT scaled scores range from 400 to 516 depending on the level the student takes. For more details on score ranges, please visit cty.jhu.edu/talent/testing. The scaled scores are based on the number of questions the student answers correctly out of 50.

TEST SECTIONS AND QUESTIONS Visual Memory Learning Phase (22 shapes): 8 minutes Surface Development (30 questions): 12 minutes Block Rotation (20 questions): 9 minutes Visual Memory Recall Phase (20 questions): 8 minutes Perspectives (22 questions): 19 minutes TEST TIMING Each subtest will be timed separately. Within the subtests, easy tasks will come first and more difficult ones later. All items are multiple choice, and each task will have only one correct solution. Students will have a timer indicating the time remaining in the subtest and should pace themselves accordingly, remembering that later questions are more difficult. Students may also skip tasks in the subtest and return to them later. Students who wish to change an answer to a question already completed may go back and do so (only within the subtest). However, you may not move between different subtestsyou may work on only one subtest at a time. An appointment time at the test center will be for 2 hours; however, some students manage to take the test in under 30 minutes. Testing times of more than 90 minutes are the exception. Note: Parents must remain at the test center during testing. SCORING Each subtest is scored separately. Students will receive a percentile rank for each subtest. Students will also receive a scaled score from 200 800, which represents a total or overall score for the test. CTY uses the scaled score to determine program eligibility into the Centers math and science courses. (STB scores are not considered for humanities and writing course eligibility.)

HIGHLIGHTS Unique test that measures spatial ability Appropriate for students seeking to qualify for CTY math or science courses Convenient option can get results quickly Taken on computer at Prometric test centers worldwide ABOUT THE TE ST The Spatial Test Battery (STB) was developed by The Johns Hopkins university Center for Talented Youth after seven years of research on the critical components of scientific innovation. Spatial ability is the ability to understand and remember the spatial relationships among objects, manipulate images in space, and visualize how separate parts of complex physical systems interrelate. This ability can be viewed as a unique type of intelligence, distinguishable from verbal, mathematical, and other forms of intellectual talent. This test is designed primarily for students who have an interest in, or demonstrated talents in, mathematical, computer, and scientific studies. However, it may also be of interest to students who excel in the arts and humanities, as it may reveal unrecognized talents. Along with an assessment of verbal, mathematical, and other forms of ability, the recognition of spatial ability provides a more comprehensive profile of talents that can be used for academic and career planning. 12

Note: Testing regulations require that only those individuals actually taking the SAT be allowed in the testing center. Parents/guardians, visitors, and school personnel who are not assisting with the test administration must leave the building/campus while the test administration is in progress (including during the breaks) and cannot return until it has been completed. Waiting accommodations will not be

available, so parents/guardians and other visitors should make arrangements to meet students after the examination outside the building/campus. Cooperation with this regulation will help ensure an orderly administration of the SAT and minimize distraction for all test-takers. Thank you. Please take a passport or valid identification.
