MILDRED CECIL [COOKE] (Joshua's twelve-times-great-great-aunt) was born on 24 August 1524, in Gidea Hall, Romford Essex, England, to Anthony Cooke of Gidea Hall 84 and Anne Cooke [Fitzwilliam] 85, as shown in family tree 16. Mildred died on 4 April 1589, aged 64 years, in Burghley House, Strand, Middlesex, England. She was buried on 21 April 1589 in Westminster Abbey, Middlesex, England. Note: Mildred was ranked with Lady Jane Grey for her erudition, known to speak Greek fluently, and had some fame as a translator. By the time Elizabeth Tudor became queen, Mildred had been the second wif e of William Cecil, later Lord Burghley since Dec 1545. Mildred had six children, three of whom died young. She had charge of their education as well as that of the various wards her husband was respo nsiblefor, including the Earl of Essex and the Earl of Oxford. In a letter dated 29 Dec 1558, the Spanish Ambassador in England referred to Mildred as a "tiresome bluestocking" (a learned lady). A ccording to Christopher Hibbert's biography, "The Virgin Queen", Mildred had a shallow dent on the left side of her forehead and was rather hunchbacked. 74. WILLIAM CECIL (Joshua's twelve-times-great-great-uncle by marriage). William is no longer living. William Cecil married Mildred Cecil [Cooke] 73, aged 20, on 21 March 1545. 75. CATHERINE KILLIGREW [COOKE] (Joshua's twelve-times-great-great-aunt) was born in 1530, in Gidea Hall, Essex, England, to Anthony Cooke of Gidea Hall 84 and Anne Cooke [Fitzwilliam] 85, as shown in family tree 16. Catherine died on 27 December 1583, aged about 53. She was buried in Church of St. Thomas the Apostle, London, England. Note: Catherine was proficient in Latin, Greek, and Hebrew. She may have accompanied her father into exile during the reign of Mary Tudor. On 4 Nov 1565 she married Henry Killigrew. In the spring of 1566, h e was sent to Scotland by Queen Elizabeth. Their life together included many such separations. Many of their letters survive, including one in which Catherine asks her sister Mildred, wife of Sir Will iam Cecil, to prevent Killigrew from being sent abroad again. It is written in verse. She also corresponded with Edward Dering, the Puritan divine. Killigrew impoverished himself in royal service, but in 1573 he was granted the manor of Lanrake, Cornwall and from 1575 until Catherines death was in England. They had four daughters, and lived primarily at Killigrews estate at Hendon and his ho use in St. Pauls Churchyard in London. Catherine was ill of the plague at Hendon in 1575 but it was childbirth that killed her. A stillborn son was born 21 Dec 1583 and she died six days later. Thr ee prominent Puritans, Andrew Melville, William Charke, and Robert Formanus, wrote verses to go on her monument in the Church of St. Thomas the Apostle in London. Her sister Elizabeth and William Camd en also wrote epitaphs. 76. HENRY KILLIGREW (Joshua's twelve-times-great-great-uncle by marriage). Henry is no longer living. Henry Killigrew married Catherine Killigrew [Cooke] 75, aged about 35, on 4 November 1565. 77. ANNE BACON [COOKE] (Joshua's twelve-times-great-great-aunt) was born in 1533, in Gidea Hall, Essex, England, to Anthony Cooke of Gidea Hall 84 and Anne Cooke [Fitzwilliam] 85, as shown in family tree 16. Anne died on 27 August 1610, aged about 77, in St. Michael's Church, St. Albans, Hertfordshire, England. Note: Cooke gave his five daughters an education equal to that of his sons. In 1559William Bercher remarked their learning in "Nobylytye of Women", also did ElizabethTudors tutor, Roger Ascham. Anne is sometimes said to have helped her father in thetask of educating Prince Edward, but at the time (1544) that Cooke took up the task,the princes household was exclusively m ale. Anne became the second wife of Sir Nicholas Bacon in 1553. According to Robert Tittler's "Nicholas Bacon: The Making of a Tudor Statesman", Anne and Nicholas visited Mary Tudor at Kenninghall in Jul 1553 and Anne stayed with the royal retinue as a gentlewoman of the bedchamber at least until William Cecil (her brother-in-law) met them near London. It is said that it was Anne Bacons presen ce at court that kept Cecil out of prison. Anne may have continued as one of Queen Marys ladies, in spite of the fact that her father was in exile for his religious beliefs for most of Marys rei gn. Her younger sister, Margaret, was later one of Mary's maids of honor. If Anne did continue to serve at court, her service must have been sporadic since she bore six children between 1554 and 1561. Only Anthony and Francis survived early childhood. Anne educated them herself until they entered Cambridge in 1573. dows who formed the backbone of English Puritanism. Throughout the latter part of her life she provided a haven at Gorhambury for radical preachers.
