THE INDIAN MOBILE INDUSTRY


In 1999, the Government of India announced a new telecom policy. This policy allowed unrestricted private entry into all service sectors. By 2001, the demand for mobile services was growing well. The number of mobile phones increased to 10 millions by the end of 2002.

The strategy of free incoming calls fueled the growth of the industry in 2002. In the early 2000 s, India had two major types of mobile service operators-GSM and CDMA. The feature of GSM network services were nationwide network for pre-paid and post paid. 67% of the customers opted for prepaid services. CDMA was also known as wireless in local pool (WLL).

was divided into fixed and mobile.

The mobile phones industry made a slow start in India in 1995 WLL had all the features and functions of GSM.
Reliance was the first operator to offer CDMA services in India..

In 2001, there were 18 GSM operators in India. In 2004, a major rift emerged between CDMA and GSM.
By mid- 2005, the growth in sales of mobile phones in India was among the fastest in the world.

It had an increase of 1.7 million customers every year.
