Learning Outcomes 9-12

Describe three stipulations required to meet certification standards. An example of a structure standard is a certification. Certifications reflect certain qualifications of an individual rather than of an agency. Certifications are credentials to enhance one's professional status. It is voluntary for some specialties, but required for nurse practitioners. Certification requirements include at least three stipulations: written examination in a specific area of competence, active practice in the specialty, and re-certification at specified periods.

Chapter 10: Motivation in the Work Setting


Give examples of dissatisfiers and satisfiers in Herzberg's theory.

Satisfiers in Herzberg's theory are factors that relate to work content. Examples are responsibility, autonomy, and achievement; also known as motivation factors. Satisfier factor sample: nature of the work itself, sense of achievement, recognition, advancement, responsibility, and autonomy. Dissatisfiers factor sample: relating to play, job security, working conditions, agency policy, and interpersonal relationship with peers and supervisors.

Describe the performance appraisal system. One element in a broader organizational system of quality assurance. Is an effective way to measure obligations of the employment agreement. An effective system requires; money; time; space allocation; and qualify personnel. In nursing departments, designed to protect client by ensuring competent practitioners who meet: professional standards; Nurses' rights and autonomy; and interest of the organization. effective system should match an organization's philosophy, goals, and objectives.
