Workshop Scavenger Hunt

Read your peers essay, then complete as much as you can of the following scavenger hunt. It has been designed to mimic good practices for revision. Enjoy! 1. Since you are reading a compare and contrast essay, identify the writers basis for comparison. Does the writer consistently discuss these bases of comparison. Comment on the organization on your peers essay. 2. Find two places in which the writer is almost saying something. Underline them, and then write, almost said in the margin. What would make it be stronger, more clearly said? 3. Are there any keywords in the essay? Circle them. To what extent do these keywords move the thinking of the essay forward? To what extent does the writer need to explain them? 4. Underline each paragraphs topic sentence. Can you easily find one? Why or why not? How would you improve it? 5. Mark the strongest and the weakest paragraph in the sample essay. What makes the strong paragraph effective? How can the weak paragraph be improved? 6. Proofread! Also, label any sentence fragments, run-ons, and any sentences that need revision. 7. Finally, write down three strengths of the essay and also write down three weaknesses of the essay.
