4 7-Segment Display with Decoder

Objective: The student will be able to do the following: Demonstrate the operation of a decoder-driver circuit that accepts a binary or BCD input code and generates the 7-segment display signals to produce the numbers 0 through 9 and other characters. Understand and use color coding scheme of resistors. Decoders: Decoder is combinational circuit that converts binary information from the n coded inputs to a maximum of 2n unique outputs. The decoder presented on this experiment are called n-to-m line decoder where m 2n. Its purpose is to generate the 2n (or fewer) mi nterms of n input variables.

Conclusion: A seven-segment display decoder is a combinational circuit that accepts a 4-bit input and generates appropriate outputs for enabling/disabling each of the 7 segments so as to display the corresponding decimal digit. The decoder has seven outputs (a, b, c, d, e, f, and g) each output controls the corresponding segment in the 7-segment display. As said above, it accepts a 4-bit input that ranges from 0000 to 1001 to get decimal output on the display from decimal 0 to 9. The seven-segment display has limitations such as it does not display the tails of decimal 6 and 9. And also it cannot display larger digit but it is capable of displaying the 16 hexadecimal characters.
