The book The Count of Monte Cristo is a long book filled with deception and strategy although, if it weren't for a certain quote, none of it past the point where he is in jail would have never happened. This most important quote is 'What do you want of me?' (Edmond said) 'Edmond Dantes, arrest you in the name of the law.' 'You arrest me?' said Dantes changing color. (Dumas 57). In jail the Count of Monte Cristo spends many years and almost starves himself from depression. When he believes that all hope is lost, he meets an extremely wealthy person who offers him the biggest fortune in the whole world at the time. Unfortunately the rich man dies but he uses that to his advantage to get out of jail. This is an example of some corrupt actions within the government which still happen today. Today, it's not as bad as then but sometimes, there are unjust arrests such as drinking under 21 but older than 18. Some people end up with a criminal record and have to stay in jail for a long time, just because they drank when they were an age they should be allowed to drink at. The difference is, the underage drinking is preventable while Edmond's imprisonment isn't. The main point of this quote is sometimes, the most unexpected could happen and it needs to be dealt with in any matter necessary. This also shows that rich people aren't always the nice people. Even today, rich and powerful people do evil things to get more and more money while making the poor poorer.

The Count of Monte Cristo was a good person at deception and managed to get his way out of jail and bring down the overlords. Although it took a long time, he eventually reached his goal. He then lived a wonderful life after the takedown of the great
