Summary
In this text H.D. Brown addresses the question of theories of second language acquisition. There are numerous approaches and theories which have a huge impact on learning. Generally, approaches provide information about how people acquire their knowledge of the language and about the conditions which will promote successful language learning. This work is largely a discussion of Krashen's Input Hypothesis and the theories of McLaughlin and Bialystok, who have questioned Krashen's theory. Starting with the questioning about the existence of an integrated and unified theory of SLA, Brown pointed that there are fair shares of claims and hypothesis in this field, each one fighting for validity and credibility, and because of this there is no an integrated and unified theory of SLA. SLA is not unlike first language, it is a subset of human general learning which involves cognitive variation, is closely related to ones personality type, is interwoven with second culture learning, and involves interference, the creation of new linguistic systems, and the learning of discourse and communicative functions of language. Brown starts describing the complexity existing in many of the separated but interrelated factors inside this intricate entity named SLA. The author explained the six statements of the taxonomy proposed by Yorio (1976) concerning a set of domains of considerations in a theory of SLA, which is, in his opinion, a framework for a theory of SLA, which gives an idea of the many different domains of inquiry that must be included in a theory of SLA. Brown considered Krashens Input Hypothesis as one of the most controversial theoretical perspectives in Second Language Acquisition. This hypothesis is based on a set of five interrelated hypotheses:

It is an analysis aimed to give teachers the means to adopting of an essential attitude of self-confidence in their ability to form hunches that will probably be accurate.
