    Blood is composed of plasma, erythrocytes, leukocytes, and platelets. Plasma is the liquid portion that carries nutrients, waste, hormones, and antibodies. Erythrocytes carry oxygen and carbon dioxide. Leukocytes (28% of total blood cells) include granulocytes such as basophils, eosinophils, and neutrophils that protect the body from infection, as well as agranulocytes like lymphocytes and monocytes that produce antibodies and engulf bacteria. Platelets (4% of total blood cells) help the blood clot by releasing chemicals that attract clotting factors.
