Developing digital literacy is important because it supports children to be confident and efficient in their use of technology. It will enable them to develop their subject knowledge by stirring their curiosity, enriching their creativity, and giving them a reason for their new understandings. It also allows them to make good use of the increasing number of digital resources available to them. Developing digital literacy in the classroom can allow children to use their existing knowledge of creating with digital technology to learning in school. In the process they will be supported to think more creatively about what it is they are doing. Supporting creativity in the classroom deals in applying elements of creativity to subject knowledge. It can be done in all subjects across the school curriculum.

The process of teaching and learning about media. Developing childrens critical and creative abilities.. The ability of children to understand the media helps them to analyze, evaluate, and create messages in many different forms. Uses an inquiry based model that helps children to ask questions about what they read, hear, and watch.

Create and produce media messages Create independent media and participate as active citizens Contribute to an expanded concept of literacy Treat mass media, popular culture, and digital media as types learning devices that require analysis and evaluation Understand the role of mass media and participatory media in constructing views

There are an amazing number of online tools and resources They can be used to:

Build awareness of the range of digital tools available Give tips on how to make the best instructional use of media and technology Provide you context and Offer you examples of the real world

Digital media content and tools provide educators and students with many opportunities to be media creators as well as media consumers There are a range of resources and references offered on ways to foster digital media literacy in your classroom by looking on: http://www.pbs.org/teachers/digital-medialiteracy/the-digital-media-landscape/

Two of the best aspects of digital tools are: Their ubiquity Their relevance across the curriculum Some Activities to try for starters would be:
Make a video of a field trip or in class activity using a digital camcorder to capture text and video Have students view a free podcast/video at iTunes or other website for homework Create a class blog at Edublogs, Wordpress.com, or other free blogging site. Create a simple text-based website using free wiki software.

Bring in a guest speaker via Skype Have students create their project work presentations and

product using collaborative creation software such as Google Docs Have students analyze paintings and comment using VoiceThread Use Twitter in the classroom to have students react to a video while watching as a group Set up a photo sharing group on Flickr Use cell phones for polling devices or for answering a quiz with free software at Poll Everywhere Use Google Earth for a geography, history, cutural, or biology scavenger hunt Create a video using Masher for a muli-media montage

The United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization does studies about using technology along with the curriculum. In 2001 a media education survey was sent out to find out which countries are incorporating media studies into their schools curriculum. A questionnaire was sent to 72 media experts in 52 countries around the world. The questionnaire focused on these three key areas:

1. Media education in schools: the extent, aims, and conceptual basis of current provision; the nature of assessment; and the role of production by students. 2. Partnerships: the involvement of media industries and media regulators in media education; the role of informal youth groups; the provision of teacher education. 3. The development of media education: research and evaluation of media education provision; the main needs of educators; obstacle to future development; and the potential contribution of UNESCO.

Answers were double sided Media education had been making uneven progress because of the difference in the amount of work towards media education from one country to the next. Some countries were not addressing media education in full swing according to the survey.

In order for teachers to educate our students about using media we need to educate them in how to use the media. In order for our students to learn to use media they have to be exposed to it. In order for teachers to expose their students to using digital media is by having the resources to do so. Much can be done with just a laptop and the internet.
