Economic advantages, particularly in the long run were experienced due to low maintenance requirements of the use of titanium dioxide in the building of highways. Aside from being cheap and readily available, TiO2 has the ability to grab the harmful airborne nitrogen oxides and convert it to harmless nitrates with the aid of sunlight or ultraviolet light. Additional benefit of incorporating TiO2 to cement is the breaking down of dirt and algae, so the mixed material is sure to stay clean.
