Assignment from NUR 350/Nursing Research/Instructor-Laura Ford 1. 1. Nursing Research 1. Describe what the term nursing research means.

What is the role of the professional nurse in regards to nursing research? Your answer should be 100 250 words, be appropriately cited, and a professional presentation (e.g. correct spelling and grammar). Student Response: The following describes what nursing research means and the role of the professional nurse in research. Nursing research, according to Nieswiadomy (2008), is the systematic, objective process of analyzing phenomena of importance to nursing (p. 5). The two types of nursing research are basic and applied. Basic research is viewed as pure research as it is knowledge for knowledges sake (Nieswiadomy, 2008. p. 7). Nieswiadomy (2008) asserts that basic research is conducted to develop, test and refine theories and generate new knowledge (p. 7). Basic research typically takes a long time to implement. Applied research, which is the type of research most often done by nurse researchers, is directed towards generating knowledge that can be used in the near future.[and] to seek solutions to existing problems (Nieswiadomy, 2008, p. 7) . The role of the professional nurse should be to actively participate in and precipitate nursing research. According to the AACN, Graduates [BSN] can understand and apply research findings from nursing and other disciplines in their clinical practice. They understand the basic elements of evidence-based practice, can work with others to identify potential research problems, and can collaborate on research teams (2006). The AACN has position statements for nurses at the BSN level and above, however ALL registered nurses can be involved in the process of research in some way. Nursing research seeks to find solutions to

problems or formulate new knowledge for nursing. The role of the professional nurse is to actively participate in, and understand the process of nursing research. 2. 3. Discipline of Nursing 3. Why does the discipline of nursing require its own research base? Your answer should be 100 250 words, be appropriately cited, and a professional presentation (e.g. correct spelling and grammar). Student Response: The discipline of nursing requires its own research base because according to Nieswiadomy (2006), nursing knowledge in the past has come from tradition, authority, and trial and error. These knowledge bases are not the most reliable, but nursing's scientific research is objective and reliable. Nursing also requires its own research or knowledge base to have the appropriate criteria to be a profession. Through research, nurses can determine what it is they do and how they do it that distinguishes them from other groups in the health care field.Nurses must demonstrate to the general public that nursing makes a difference in the health status of people (Nieswiadomy, 2006, p. 9). The discipline of nursing requires its own research base to

ensure credibility as a profession by demonstrating its own unique knowledge base (Nieswiadomy, 2006). Reference Nieswiadomy, R. M. (2007). Foundations of Nursing Research (5th Ed.). Upper Saddle River, New Jersey: Prentice Hall. Score: 2.5/1
