This observation exercise is valid for use in the academic year September 2009 to August 2010. Centres must submit their moderation sample by 15 May 2010. Please note that the marks for this task will only be accepted for the Summer 2010 session and will NOT be valid for submission at any other time during the lifetime of GCE Chemistry (9CH01). Category Specification topics Activity Materials allowed Inorganic Chemistry Unit 2 Topic 2.7 The periodic table groups 2 and 7 Unit 5 Topic 5.3 Redox and the chemistry of the transition metals Activity b - Qualitative observation Student brief, writing materials, apparatus and chemicals supplied. No books, notes or the User Guide are allowed. Conditions Time allowed Health and safety Students work individually under supervision. Written results must be handed in at the end of the session. One hour of laboratory time. Eye protection and laboratory coats should be worn throughout the exercise. Take particular care with concentrated hydrochloric acid which is corrosive. Follow any other safety precautions given by the teacher. The normal Health and Safety rules of the Chemistry Department must be followed.

Student brief
In this exercise you are given solid samples of two inorganic compounds. Each compound contains one cation and one anion. You are to carry out tests on each compound recording your observations in the spaces provided. Using information gained from the tests, answer the questions that follow the tests. Information You are supplied with Samples of two compounds labelled A and B. The apparatus and chemicals needed to carry out the tests. (a) (i) Dissolve the sample of A in about 10 cm3 of distilled water in a boiling tube. (1) Observation

(ii) To 2 cm3 of the solution of A in a test tube, add dilute aqueous ammonia solution until there is no further change. Gently shake the test tube as you add the aqueous ammonia solution. (3) Observations

(iii) Write the formula of the species containing the cation from A that remains at the end of test (a)(ii). (1)

(iv) To 4 cm3 of concentrated hydrochloric acid in a test tube, add 6 drops of the solution of A. (1) Observation

(v) Write an ionic equation to represent the reaction occurring in test (a)(iv). (1)

(vi) To 2 cm3 of the solution of A in a test tube, add 10 drops of dilute hydrochloric acid followed by 6 drops of aqueous barium chloride. (1) Observation

(vii) Identify compound A by writing its formula in the box below. (1)

(b) (i)

Dissolve the sample of B in about 10 cm3 of distilled water in a boiling tube. (1) Observation

(ii) To 2 cm3 of the solution of B in a test tube, add dilute aqueous ammonia solution until the test tube is about half full. Stopper the tube and shake it gently. Remove the stopper and allow the mixture to stand for a few minutes. (2) Observations

(iii) To 2 cm3 of aqueous potassium manganate(VII) in a test tube, add 2 cm3 of dilute sulfuric acid followed by 3 cm3 of the solution of B. (1) Observation

(iv) Write an ionic half equation to show the change involving the cation in B in test (b)(iii). (1)

Glass rod. Materials 1 g of hydrated copper(II) sulfate, CuSO4.5H2O, labelled A. HARMFUL 1 g of hydrated iron(II) sulfate, FeSO4.7H2O, labelled B. HARMFUL Access to the reagents listed below. Dilute hydrochloric acid; concentration approximately 2.0 mol dm3. IRRITANT Dilute sulfuric acid; concentration approximately 1.0 mol dm3. IRRITANT Dilute aqueous ammonia; concentration approximately 2.0 mol dm3. Concentrated hydrochloric acid. CORROSIVE Aqueous barium chloride; concentration approximately 0.20 mol dm3. HARMFUL Aqueous potassium manganate(VII); concentration approximately 0.02 mol dm3. Distilled water. Reagents should be in stoppered containers labelled with the name, but not necessarily the concentration, of the reagent. The appropriate hazard warning should be attached to the reagent container. The identities of A and B must not be disclosed to students. Notes This exercise should be able to be completed in about one hour of laboratory time.
