Tuning of Controller Mr.

Atul Anil Aphale

Controller tuning: Tuning a control loop is the adjustment of its control parameters to the optimum values for the desired control response. Factors in controller tuning: A. For Process: For process the key factors which have to consider before controller tuning are: 1. Model Structure: Model structure should be defined before tuning. E.g. Linear, first order with dead time. 2. Model Error: Linear dynamic models always have errors, because the plant is nonlinear and its operation changes. Since the tuning will be based on these models, the tuning procedure should account for the errors, so that acceptable control performance is provided as the process dynamic change. E.g. 3. Input Forcing: All the disturbance also should be define with their behavior 4. Measured variable: We should choose measured variable for process. B. For Controller: For controller, following key factors should be considered. 1. Structure: Structure of the controller should be defined such as PI or PID. 2. Tuning Constants: The appropriate method to find out optimum values of tuning parameters. C. For control performance: For control performance following key factors should be considered: 1. Controlled variable performance: We shall select the IAE of the controlled variable. 2. Manipulated variable behavior: Manipulated variable must not have variation outside the defined limit.
