Inferences (reading between the lines)
Making a logical guess using evidence from the text,
your own knowledge, and common sense.
Involves finding deeper meanings in events and
situations, meanings that are not explicit.
When you make an inference about the future, it is a
prediction.
Developing skills in making inferences and making
predictions is a critical aspect of becoming a master of
words and of literature.
Making inferences and predictions helps make more
sense of lifeor someone elses life.
Look for details that reveal important aspects of setting,
plot, and character.

Use common sense and prior knowledge to make


connections.

Analyze a character's actions and words to determine his or


her values.

Pay attention to how the narrator or characters make


inferences.

Analyze your thought process and determine whether you


are using faulty logic or jumping to conclusions.
Determine what motivates a character, what are
his values, and predict what his next action will be.

Use character history to predict character future.

Be ready for surprises. If the plot went exactly as


expected, it probably would not be very
interesting.

Clarify and adapt your predictions as you read.

recognize its tone or range of tones.
Some adjectives to describe TONE:
Formal, informal, serious, humorous, amused,
angry, playful, neutral, satirical, gloomy, sad,
resigned, cheerful, ironic, paranoid, nervous, clear,
detailed, imploring, suspicious, witty
Listen to the story while thinking of literary elements.
Focus on tone and mood.

Discussion:
Has your opinion of the narrator changed?
Do you think he/she is actually insane? Why?
Identify the mood and tone.
What is the overall feeling in the story?
What details does Poe use to create the mood and tone?
Compare the mood and tone from the reading of
the text to the listening of the text.
Does it change? If so, does it change the story for
you?
