Laughter and Derision: Sremacs Greeks

Sremacs view of the Greeks reflects, first of all, the writers view of the values of life.
As a traditionalist and a hedonist, the writer is partial towards the pleasure-seeking
Greeks of Ni, guardians of the patriarchal way of life, socially differentiated strata and
religious purity. He depicts his heroes with humour initiated through dialectal forms of
certain words and comic complications. On the other hand, Belgrade Greeks are the
object of Sremacs derision. Their false values, the cultural vanity of these characters,
their narrow merchant mentality, induce the author to poke fun at them and follow their
immersion into the Serbian environment and financial ruin with varying degrees of
sarcasm. The grotesque images of the everyday life of merchants are somewhat softened
by the linguistic mixture they use, entirely different from the speech of Sterijas Greeks,
or through the grouping of rhymed names.
