ME 3331 Thermal Sciences 1 Homework #8 (due 11/14/12)

Problems or parts of problems are graded on a 4 point scale as follows: 0 Did not do the problem or a final answer is given with no explanation or procedure 1 Problem is attempted but the correct procedure/setup and final answer is incorrect 2 Correct procedure is followed but final answer is incorrect 3 Correct procedure is followed and correct final answer is obtained Homework #8 total points = 15

1) One kilogram of water at 300C expands against a piston in a cylinder until it reaches ambient pressure, 100 kPa, at which point the water has a quality of 90%. It may be assumed that the expansion is isentropic. a. (3 Points) What was the initial pressure in the cylinder? b. (3 Points) How much work is done by the water? 2) (3 Points) An insulated cylinder fitted with a piston has an initial volume of 0.15 m3 and contains steam at 400 kPa, 200C. The steam is expanded adiabatically, and during the process the work output is carefully measured and found to be 30 kJ. It is claimed that at the final state the steam is in the two-phase (liquid-vapor) region. What is your evaluation of this claim? 3) One kilogram of air (assumed to be an ideal gas) contained in a cylinder at 1.5 MPa, 1000 K, expands in a reversible, adiabatic process to 100 kPa. Calculate the final temperature and work done in this process using: a. (3 Points) Constant specific heat taken at the inlet temperature, Table A-20 b. (3 Points) Ideal air properties, Table A-22
