ITV seems to air many profile documentaries, a lot of which focus upon the royal family for example William at 30 and William and Kate: The First Year. There are also many educational/cultural documentaries such as The Story of St Paul and Shakespeare Uncovered. This suggests that theyre aiming to appeal to an older, middle class audience. The True Cost of Child Care was featured on ITVs Tonight Programme in May 2012. Focusing on our chosen topic, the footage highlights the financial struggle parents face when sending their children to nursery. As this was featured on prime time news its clearly a topic ITV felt their audience would be interested in and it could therefore be a successful documentary. BBC airs mostly educational documentaries which focus upon historical events such as How We Won the War and Vikings. For this reason they would not be an ideal channel to show our documentary as we have very different target audiences. Channel 4 has a whole array of documentaries covering a wide range of topics from investigative show such as 999: Whats Your Emergency? to undercover shows such as Undercover Boss USA. There are many documentaries based around family and parenting, all of which are aimed at the same target audience as us; working class parents. Included in their roster of shows is Supernanny. The reality TV programme which is on its sixth series, features professional nanny Jo Frost, helping parents who are struggling with their child-rearing. Another is the ever popular One Born Every Minute which features real footage from inside a labour ward. One Born Every Minute is on its third UK series and both shows have also been a success in the US. The popular demand for shows in this area is evident which means there is definitely a market for our chosen topic.
