Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security

Through education, regulation and enforcement the Department of Safety & Homeland Security ensures the overall safety and welfare of the public. The department was established in 1939, and currently encompasses the Tennessee Highway Patrol, Office of Homeland Security, and Driver Services. Department Customer-Focused Government Initiatives: All top management employees have completed Customer-Focused Government (CFG) training. As part of departments CFG Action Plan, the department installed 72 iPad kiosks inside 26 driver service centers to improve customer service and reduce wait times. Through increased efforts in DUI and seat belt enforcement in 2011, Tennessee recorded the lowest number of traffic fatalities (946) since 1963. In 2011, the Office of Homeland Security trained approximately 6,400 public and private sector officials in awareness, prevention, protection and response to terrorist-related events. The department has created a special Identity Crimes Unit composed of staff members from THP, Homeland Security, and Driver Services.
