The Parts of Speech Part 1 - Nouns

A NOUN IS THE NAME OF A PERSON, PLACE OR THING. THERE ARE FOUR TYPES OF NOUNS:
1. COMMON NOUNS 2. PROPER NOUNS 3. COLLECTIVE NOUNS 4. ABSTRACT NOUNS

COMMON NOUNS
Common nouns are any ordinary things that you

can see or touch.


A girl A car

An Apple

PROPER NOUNS
Proper nouns are special names of a person,

place or things. It starts with a capital letter.

COLLECTIVE NOUNS
Collective Nouns are the names given to a group of

persons or things.
Examples:

- class
- herd - bunch

A band of musician

- band

ABSTRACT NOUNS
An abstract noun is the name of something that

could exist in your mind although you cannot see nor touch it.
Example: - Love - Sadness

- Joy
- Anger

A noun also has number. It could be singular or

plural.
SINGULAR One Example: -A chair - A girl PLURAL More than one Example: - Chairs - Girls

Many singular nouns add s to make the plural - Boy (boys) - School (schools) - Car (cars) Other singular add es - Beach (beaches)

- Fox (foxes)

Hmm..What should I do if a noun ends in y?


If a noun ends in y and has a consonant before the

y, the plural drops the y and add ies.


Examples:

- Cry (cries)
- Fly (flies) - Sky (skies)

- Dry (dries)

How about compound nouns?


Compound nouns are made of two or more words. Examples: - Butter fly butterfly - Base ball baseball - Air craft aircraft They make the plural in two ways a) a)

Adding s at the end of the word Butterfly (butterflies)

Adding s to the first part of the compound - Brother-in-law (brothers-in-law)

GENDER?
Nouns can be male (masculine) or female (feminine).

If its neither, it is neuter.


If it is used for both male and female, it is said to be

common gender.
Masculine Man Feminine Woman Neuter Mountain Common children
