1)Question: How fast is your reaction time?

2)Research:

Experiments: Ruler Drop (Right Hand) Ruler Drop (Left Hand) 3)Materials: Ruler (30 cm) Measuring chart Partner 4)Hypothesis: If I use my (right/left) then I think that I will get 0.17 seconds because the average is about 0.215 seconds and I think that I am faster because 0.22 on the time chart is a high number. 5) Procedures: 1: Partner holds the ruler above the other persons hand. 2:Line the the index nger and thumb with the zero cm mark on the ruler. 3: Partner randomly drops the ruler. 4: After dropping the ruler the other person will catch the ruler. 5: Check what the cm marking on the ruler, then check the chart for your timing and record your time.

6: Repeat 4 times, than nd your average. REMEMBER: If your partner misses the ruler then repeat the trial that your on. 5a) Variables Independent: Right Hand, Left Hand Dependent: Reaction Times Controlled: Drop the ruler, record, check the time chart, repeat test, line index nger and thumb to zero cm. (RIGHT HAND) Trial 1
0.175 sec

Trial 2
0.205 sec

Trial 3
0.15 sec Got lower then my hypothesis.

Trial 4
0.14 sec I got more used to catching the ruler.

Average
0.17 sec My average was exact on my hypothesis. (Rounded my average)

Thought I Got worse then would do better. the trial before.

(LEFT HAND) Trial 1

0.18 sec Have to get used to catching from my left hand.

Trial 2
0.15 sec Numbers jumped way down. Easier than my right hand.

Trial 3
0.20 sec Worse than my my rst trial.

Trial 4
0.11 Very weird mix on timing.

Average
0.32 Had lots of ups and downs. (Rounded my average)

Discussion Questions: 1.Which hand reacted faster? 2.Was your hypothesis right or wrong? 3.Did you notice weird observation? 4.Were you surprised with the reaction? 5.Did the number get lower or higher as you got closer to trial 4? Data and Observations: Alexa was the only one that reacted faster with her left hand but, Emilia, Julie Mei and I all caught it faster with our right hand. All of us agreed that lining 0 cm to our ngers was challenging but, Alexa thought that know when to catch the ruler was most challenging. They both thought it was fun experiment because they had great

partners. For us we missed the ruler sometimes but, for Emilia and Alexa there diculties were that they were seating in a swirly chair so they werent as accurate. Summary: My partner was Julie Mei and we decided to do ruler drop for our reaction time experiment because, we had the chart to measure accurately. I learned that I can react faster on my right hand and that it s not as easy as I thought to catch a ruler with out knowing when its coming. Julie Mei and I hypothesized we would catch the ruler in 0.17 seconds and on my rst trial I got 0.17 sec as my average but, my left hand was 0.32 sec as my average. We decided to use our right hand and left hand because it was easiest to catch a ruler. Having variables was really helpful because we could double check to make sure were not doing anything wrong or not to miss out on anything. Some errors we had was, that the rst time I wasnt used to catching the ruler so I missed it 2 times on the rst round and lining the 0cm to your thumb and index nger was also very dicult. Looking at the graph again I did much beer on my right hand than I did on my left. But, I also noticed that all of my numbers go up and down. What I mean by this is that sometimes the number was really high or really low. I learned that when your brain doesnt know exactly when something is going to happen you always have to be

prepared. Like if you start driving and someone cuts in front of you out of nowhere you have to react really fast so you dont crash. My hypothesis was 0.17 seconds. My average on my right hand 0.17 seconds. So my hypothesis was right on my right but, on my left hand I got 0.32 seconds. I think I did beer on my right hand because I write with my right hand so I have faster reex because when I write or make a mistake I dont need to wait 3 seconds to get the eraser Im already used to it but, I dont write with my left hand so I dont do many things with my left hand. I learned that not everyone can get the same average it all depends on how fast your brain can collect the information and transfer that to your whole body. Not everybody exercises there brain. But, if you do stu like tetris that exercises your brain. But if you just watch TV all day then your body isnt exercising. I enjoyed nding out the information to create a hypothesis and collecting data and making observations because I really wanted to nd out if my answer was correct or not. I really focused on collecting data because if anything goes wrong the answer it self can change. I thought the experiment was really exciting because I coould practice for the pig heart experiment and my partner was great.
