Save the Last Word for Me Student Copy

1) As you read the selection, mark five statements you want to respond to in one of the following ways: You agree or disagree with the idea. It contradicts what you know. There was a surprising turn of events. An idea intrigues you and you want to think about it. There is something you would like to try. 2) After you finish reading, write each statement as it appeared in the selection on the front of a 3" x 5" index card. 3) On the reverse side of each card write your personal response to be shared in a small group. This statement becomes the "Last Word" told in your small group. 4) Meet in a group of four to do the following: Determine which statement you want to tell first. Select a group member to begin the discussion process. Have that person read the statement from the front of the card and show where the sentence is located in the selection. Once the statement on the front of the card is shared, this person may not say another word. All group members are given an opportunity to tell their reaction to the statement. Each group member must participate. When all group members have shared, the person who wrote the statement can state the "Last Word" written on the back of the card. Continue with the second person in the group, repeating the process until all of the cards are completed.
