EMERGENCY AND RETRIEVAL REGISTRARS ALICE SPRINGS 2013

High acuity medicine in a young population Servicing very remote communities over 1 million km2 80% of attendants Aboriginal Enjoyable roster and teaching, supportive consultants Great relationships with all inpatient teams Exquisite surrounding landscape
Alice Springs Hospital has vacancies for Emergency registrars and Retrieval registrars for 2013. We are accredited for 12 months ED, 6 months retrieval, 6 months paediatrics, 6 months ICU, 6 months anaesthetics and 6 months medicine. We will accept both applications for the whole year, or rotations for 3 or 6 months where you could come out here for 1 or more terms and return to your base hospital. You may be able to arrange this with your DEMT or Director. The medicine is incredibly interesting. Rheumatic heart disease, bronchiectasis, chronic liver disease, renal disease, and diabetes are all prevalent, in a young population. Overwhelming sepsis is common. Trauma is also common, with MVAs, truncal and thigh stabbings, and blunt trauma from assault. Retrievals are mainly by fixed wing aircraft over a catchment area of 1 million square km, and are a challenging mix of primary response, interfacility from remote communities and tertiary transfer of complex ICU patients. There is an emphasis on upskilling in Anaesthetics and ICU when not flying. We have about 42,000 presentations per year, with the 38% admission rate reflecting the high acuity. Our median age is 34 years. 32% are paediatric, and Aboriginal people make up 78% of presentations. The surrounding McDonnell Ranges are exquisitely beautiful, tall gum trees stand in the river beds, and we have blue cloudless skies almost every day. The Todd River in town usually flows about 3 times a year. Camping, walking, rock climbing, and cycling are very popular. Its a vibrant bustling tourist town. This is a great place to come to for your 6 months non-tertiary placement, to gain experience if you are thinking of doing voluntary service overseas, or if you are interested in broadening your experience of emergency medicine or Aboriginal health.
