The Ice Cream Challenge, Part 1 Thurs.

LT: I can observe and describe the effects of phase changes on states of matter. C.S. -I can describe melting and freezing. -I can describe condensation and evaporation.

Engage (5min) What phase is this going through? -melting ice cube (melting) -sweating can (condensation) -dry ice in pipet explosion (sublimation) Explore (15-20) Intro: (5 min) Review phase changes. *see states of matter chart. The Ice cream challenge: *give them the recipe, explain how to make it Hand out and explain the note catcher. Ask: What do you think will happen?? *Is ice cream a solid or a liquid? *Does it start as a solid and melt into a liquid? *Or does it start as a liquid and freeze into a solid? *outline process in the classroom first -What are you going to do? How are you going to make your ice cream? They do (15 min) 1. Make Ice Cream 2. Fill out note catcher -You can only get your ice cream to eat when

Materials -x 20 copies (double sided) of recipe -x 90 copies of note catchers 3, 26oz. containers of salt 1, 1/2 gallons of milk Ziploc freezer bags (Enough for each student to have one). X80 Quart size Ziploc bags(Again, enough for each child to have one). X80 5 lb bag of granulated sugar 8 oz container of vanilla flavoring Plastic spoons( Enough to ensure each child has one). Winter gloves ( A pair for each student) Package of paper (or plastic) bowls (Bowl for each student).

Recipe -Mix 1/2 cup milk,1/2 teaspoon vanilla and 1 tablespoon sugar in one of the quart size bags -Mix 4 c ice, 4 tbsp salt in 1 quart bag *put all in a gallon bag. Shake. (10 min) Notes: -Salt and ice work together to freeze the cream mixture. When salt comes in contact with water, it lowers the freezing point, which allow the melted ice and salt mix to reach a lowered temp than would otherwise be possible. -ice draws heat away from the milk, and cools it. -mixing the salt and ice together, and surrounding the cream in the mix, creates an

everything is cleaned up. Explain (10) 1. Why and how did all the ingredients become ice cream? 2. What states of matter did the ingredients go through? Before shaking? After shaking? 3. Why do you think that we needed to add salt to the outer bag of ice? Answer: Adding salt causes the freezing point of the ice to be lowered. The temperature of the melting ice falls below 0 degrees Celsius. The melting ice removes heat energy from the milk mixture changing the milk mixture to a solid. Extend 1. the purpose of salt Salt lowers the freezing point of ice, causing it to melt, and return to its liquid state.ex: salting the roads. Example: salting icy roads 2. Temperature Water freezes at 0 C or 32 F Water boils at 100C or 212 F Evaluate (5-10) Share out-what did you find. What happened? *Is ice cream a solid or a liquid? *Does it start as a solid and melt into a liquid? *Or does it start as a liquid and freeze into a solid? Exit Ticket:

envir. Where the cream can become cold enough to freezehence, ICE CREAM! The cream has become iced.
