Week 1

Writers collect entries that can be developed into essays. Observe the world with extra alertness and record findings. LC Unit 3 Lesson 1

Writers collect ideas for essays. Writers will be more thoughtful about what they see and writing at greater length. LC Unit 3 Lesson 2

Writing Workshop Orient children to the genre of essays by contrasting essay structures with narratives. Writers need a sense of what they are aiming for in order to collect, elaborate on, and structure their writing. LC Unit 3 Lesson 3 Writers will free write and ask questions in an effort to outgrow earlier drafts of a thesis statement LC Unit 3 Lesson 8

Writers use conversational prompts to spur elaboration. Grow ideas for longer stretches by talking about ideas. Prompts will be displayed on anchor chart for remainder of the unit. LC Unit 3 Lesson 4

Writers will revisit narrative entries collected earlier in the year, layering them with insights and embedding them into ideas. LC Unit 3 Lesson 5

Week 2

Writers will reread their writing to find or invent a seed idea- thesis LC Unit 3 Lesson 6

Writers understand that essayists form their writing before they draft. Students will find three supports for thesis and create boxes and bullets to elaborate those ideas. LC Unit 3 Lesson 7 Writers strive to tell the truth, even when they are inventing what happened.

Writers angle their writing, unpack mini stories that support ideas they want to advance.

Writers seek outside sources, soliciting other peoples stories, to support their ideas in essay writing. LC Unit 3 Lesson 10

Week 3

Writers structure information to support a claim in the same way again and again. Writers create parallelism that can begin in a list. LC Unit 3 Lesson 11

Writers gather a variety of information to support their claims. Demonstrate strategies writers use for collecting and writing with that information. LC Unit 3 Lesson 13 Writers Edit

Writers take their collected files of writing and transform them into drafts by organizing and piecing them together. LC Unit 3 Lesson 14

Writers create cohesion with repeated phrases, logically sequenced information and transitions words. LC Unit 3 Lesson 15

Week 4

Writers will learn ways used to introduce and conclude their essays. Writers will try these ways in their essay. LC Unit 3 Lesson 16
