ThismanualisintendedfortheinstructionofthealtarserversintheOrdinaryFormof theRomanRiteatSt.EdwardCatholicChurchinNewark,California. INTRODUCTION TheprimaryroleofthealtarserveristoassistthepriestduringtheHolySacrificeoftheMass. Altarserverscarrythecross,theprocessionalcandles(someMasses),holdthebookforthe priestcelebrantwhenheisnotatthealtar,assistthepriestatthepreparationofthealtar duringtheoffertory,washthehandsofthepriest,andassistthepriestcelebrantanddeaconin otherfunctions. Altarserversarechosenfromamongthefaithfulwhodisplayadesiretoparticipateinan intimatewayduringtheHolySacrificeoftheMass.Itisanextremeprivilegetokneelsocloseto thealtarasourlovingSavior,JesusChrist,becomestrulypresent,Body,Blood,SoulandDivinity uponthealtar. ELIGIBILITY BoysandgirlswhohavemadetheirFirstHolyCommunionareeligibleandencouragedto becomealtarservers.Eachcandidatemustcompleteaperiodoftrainingbeforeserving. REQUIREMENTS Analtarservermustbewillingandinterestedtoparticipateinthisministryontheirownaccord andnotbyparentalorpeerpressure.Areluctantordisinterestedserverisadistractiontothe celebrant,otherservers,andtheentirecommunity.Similarly,parentsmustundertakeanactive roleinsupportingtheirchildinthisministrybyensuringthattheiraltarserverarrivestotheir assignedMassontime. Analtarserverperformsallassigneddutieswithattention,dignityandreverencebecausethey areservinginthepresenceofOurLord.TheSanctuaryisholy,andaccesstoitisrestrictedtoa veryfewpeople.Donotabusetheprivilegeyouhavebeengiventoenterthesanctuaryby beingdisrespectfulorirreverent.RememberweareinGodshouse. AnaltarserverknowstheentireOrderoftheMass,alltheresponses(Amen,ThanksbetoGod, andalsowithyou,etc)andalltheprincipalprayersoftheMass(Gloria,NiceneCreed,Maythe Lordaccept...,Sanctus,OurFather,LambofGod,Lord,Iamnotworthy).Therefore,each servermusttakethetimetomemorizetheseprayersiftheydonotalready knowthem. Eachcandidatemustidentify,knowthepurposeof,andproperlyuseeachliturgicalitemused atMass. ByministeringattheLordsaltar,eachaltarserverwillalsobeactivelydiscerningthepossibility ofservingthechurchinthefutureasapriest,deacon,orreligioussister.

UNDERSTANDINGTHEPURPOSEOFSERVINGATTHEALTAR ByservingatMass,thealtarserverisgiventheabilitytoserveGodintheliturgy. Bythealtarserversexampleofreverence,loyalty,anddedication,thealtarservers helpshisparishworshipGod. Byserving,thealtarserverisansweringGodscalltoserve. Byserving,thealtarservergrowsinhis/herownfaithanddevotion. Analtarserverisaprayerleader,totheextentthathis/heractionsduringtheMass assistthepeopleinknowingwhattodo. AnaltarserverassiststhepriestpreparingforMassandatthealtar. Analtarserverisresponsiblefortakingcareofanyproblemsthatmayoccurduring Mass.Forexample,ifthepriestdoesnothaveenoughpurificators,theserverwill discreetlyretrievethepurificatorsfromthesacristy. Analtarserverisnotadistractiontothefaithfulslistening/prayertoGod.

GENERALRULESANDRESPONSIBILITIES Thepriestdependsonyou. Youneedtobeprompt.Arrive2030minutesbeforeMasstovest,helpthesacristanset up,andtoprepareoneselffortheHolySacrificeoftheMass. ServersshouldalsoremainafterMasstohelpcleanupandsayaPrayerofThanksgiving toGodforthegraceofbeingabletoserveatMass. ServersshouldnothandleanyconsecratedhostsorthePreciousBloodunless specificallydirectedbythepriestordeaconinrare,emergencysituations. ServersmustremaininthesanctuaryduringtheentireMassandarenottoleavethe sanctuaryunlesstheyneedtoenterthesacristytoretrievesomething,theyareillor theyaredirectedtodosobythepriestordeacon. EveryaltarservermustattendeveryMasstheyarescheduledfor.Whenaservercannot bepresent,thatserverandhis/herparentsmustarrangeareplacement. Youhelpthepriestmakesurethatthingsgosmoothly. Theparishionersdependonyoutoo. Agoodserverkeepsthingsgoingsmoothly,neversloppy. Staycalmwhenthingsgowrong. Beresponsibleandcalm BereverentinChurch.

DRESSANDAPPEARANCE LITURGICALDRESS: Serverswillvestinawhitealb.Albsshouldbecleanandpressed.Dirtyalbsmustbe setasideandbroughttotheattentionofthesacristan.Thelengthofthealbshouldbeatthe ankleandshouldnotbeshorterthanfourinchesabovetheankle.Likewise,albsshouldnot dragonthefloor. DRESSCLOTHES: Clotheswornunderanalbshouldbesuchthattheysonothavepatterns,pictures, stripes,oranyotherdesignwhichwillshowthroughthewhitealb.Solidcoloredshirts andblackpantsarehighlyrecommended. Wewouldprobablydressourbestifwemetthepresident,butGodismuch greaterandmoreimportantthanthepresident.SinceweareinGodshouse, weoughttomakeeveryefforttodressourverybest.However,wewantto attractaslittleattentiontoourselvesaspossible. Boys:Black,darkblue,ordarkbrownpantsshouldbeworn.Bluejeans,shorts,dungarees,or frayedpantsarenotpermitted.Pantlegsshouldnotgatheratthebottomofthefeetanddrag ontheground. Girls:Dressesorskirtsofappropriatelengthmaybeworn,butblackorbrownshoes muststillbeworn. SHOES Onlyblackordarkbrownshoeswithadarksoleshouldbeworn.Sneakersorrunningshoes (unlesstheyaresolidblack),houseslippers,flipflops,cowboyboots,sandalsoranyother sportsfootweararenotpermitted. GROOMING Strangelydyedhairorwildhaircutsarenotallowed.Boyshairshouldbenolongerthanto thebottomoftheshirtcollar.Girlshairshouldbetiedbackandoutoftheirface. Boys:Earrings,studs,nailpolish,makeup,orexposedjewelry(otherthanonewatchandone ring)arenotallowed. Girls:Hoopearrings,noserings,flashyhairpieces,longnails,andheavymakeuparenot allowed.

Facethepersonwhoisspeaking.Thehandsshouldbeheldtogetheronthebreast,palmto palm,withthefingersextendedandclosetogetherpointingupwards,thethumbsbeing crossedrightoverleft. KneelingKneelupright,notslouchingorsittingonyourheels.Thehandsshouldbeheldasin thestandingpositionorfoldedonplacedonthekneeler.Theheadmaybeboweddownor facingthepersonwhoisspeaking. SittingSitupstraightanddonotslouch.Bothfeetshouldbeflatonthefloor.Thehands shouldbeplacedpalmsdownontheknees.Facethepersonwhoisspeaking.Neverplaywith yourhair,pickyournoseorotherwisecauseapublicreasontotakenoticeofyou. GenuflectingAgenuflectionismadebydroppingtherightkneetotouchthegroundnearthe leftheel.OnegenuflectsonlytotheTabernacle(ortotheCrucifixonGoodFriday)whenever onepassesinfrontofit.OnemayormaynotmaketheSignoftheCross.Genuflectingis properlymadewhenonestopswalkingandthengenuflects.Inotherwords,youcannotwalk andgenuflectatthesametime. BowingAsimplebowismadebybowingthehead.Asimplebowismadetothepriestafter presentingthecruetstohimandafterwashinghishands.Asimplebowisalsomadewhenone arrivesatthealtar,butiscarryingsomething.Aprofoundbowismadebybowingtheheadand shoulders.AprofoundbowismadetothealtarandduringtheCreedatthesentence:By thepoweroftheHolySpirit. PROCESSIONS AprocessionisapublicexpressionofdemonstrationbytheclergyandlaityoftheirChristian belief.Processionsmayserveapurelypracticalpurposeorasymbolicpurpose.Inthe celebrationofthemassanumberofprocessionsmaytakeplaceinvolvingclergyandlaity.The clergyandministersmayenterinprocession,thegiftsofbreadandwinemaybebroughtforth inprocession,thelaitycomeinprocessionforcommunion,andtheclergyandministersmay leaveinprocession. CINCTURE SymbolofChastity Thecincturetiesthealbatthewaist.Itsymbolizesthevirtuesofchastity andcontinence(theexerciseofselfconstraintagainsttemptation). STOLE SymbolofthePriestlyOfficeandImmortality Thestole,matchingtheliturgicalcolor,isalong,scarflikevestmentworn overthealbandunderthechasuble.Thepriestwearsthestolearoundhis necksothatithangsequallydownhischestinfront.Thedeaconwearshis stoleovertheleftshoulderandtiedathisrightside. Uponreachingthealtar,thecrossbearerwillstopforamomentatthetopstep,bow hishead,turnrightandputthecrossawayinthesacristyandtakehisseatonthe Gasparside. Uponreachingthealtar,thecandle1andcandle2willstop,bowtheirheads,and togetherplacethecandlesonthecredencetable.Then,theyproceedtotheirseatson theEdwardside. ThebookbearerwillgenuflectandproceedtohisseatontheGasparside.

OpeningPrayer(Bookbeareronly) AttheendoftheGloria,whenyouhear,YoualonearetheMostHighJesusChrist,the bookbearerpicksupthesmallRomanMissalandbringsittothepriestcelebrant. Afterthecongregationsays,Amen,thebookbearerreturnstheRomanMissaltothe table.Then,allSitfortheReadings.

AlleluiaorGospelAcclamation(Candle1andCandle2) OncetheAlleluiabegins,candle1andcandle2pickuptheircandles,walktothefront sideofthealtar,andfaceeachother,leavingenoughroomforthedeaconorpriestto standbetweenthem. Oncethepriestordeaconisready,theywillproceedinasinglefilelinetotheambo. Theywillstandoneithersideoftheamboandremainthereforthedurationofthe Gospel. OncetheGospelhasended,theyreturntheircandlestothecredencetable,andsitfor thehomily.

GeneralIntercessions(Bookbeareronly) Duringthecreed,whenyouhear,Webelieveinthecommunionofsaints,thebook bearerwillpickupthebluebinderandbringittothecelebrant. ThecelebrantwillreadtheInvitationtoprayer.Afterwhichthebookbearerwillreturn tohisplace,butwhilestillholdingthebinderopen,waitingforthelector/deaconto finishtheintercessions. Oncetheintercessionsareover,returntothecelebrant,whowillrecitetheprayerto closetheintercessions. After,returntoyourplaceandpickupthelargeRomanMissalwithbookstand.

Offertory(AllServersneeded) Oncethecongregationhassatdown,thebookbearerimmediatelyplacesthelarge RomanMissalwithbookstandonaltar. Meanwhile,Candle1willtakethechaliceveiloffthechalicesandtogetherwithCandle 2,theywillbringallthechalicesandciboriatothealtar.Leavethepurificatorsatthe credencetable.(Seediagramforsetup) Oncethehavecompletedthemovementofchalices,Candle1andCandle2willstandin frontofthecredencetableandinbetweentheirkneelers.

Whentheprieststands,Candle1,Candle2,andCrossbearerwillgotothebottomstep withhim.Candle1and2willstandtohisright,whileCrossbearerwillstandtohisleft. ThepriestwillgiveCrossbearerthecollection.Heplacesitonthefloorinfrontofthe sacristydoor.Thenhesitsdown. Candle1willreceivetheciboriumofbreadfromthepriest.Hebringsittothealtarvia theEdwardsideandplacesitwiththerestoftheciboriaofbread.Thenhereturnsto thecredencetableandpicksupthecruetofwaterwithoutiscaponandstandscloser totheEdwardstatuewithCandle2whoisholdingthecruetofwine.Thecruetisheldin therighthand,withthelefthandplacedoverthechest. Candle2willreceivethecruetofwinefromthepriest,takesittothecredencetable, whereheremovesthecap.ThenhestandswithCandle1whoisholdingthecruetof water.Thecruetisheldintherighthand,withthelefthandplacedoverthechest. Candle1and2willpresentthewineandwatertothepriestordeacon.After,theywill returntothecredencetable. Candle1willretrievethebowlinhislefthand,whileretainingthecruetofwaterinhis right.Thistime,hewillstandclosertothecongregationwithCandle2. Candle2willputdownthenowemptycruetofwine,andpickupandunfoldthefinger towel.Thistime,hewillstandclosertotheEdwardstatuewithCandle1. Oncetheyhavewashedthepriestshands,theywillreturntotheirplaces.
